The tragically short life of Trevor Neo

Throughout his short eight-month life, little Trevor suffered repeated abuse at the hands of his own parents. He died while his mother slept and his father played games on his phone nearby.

Trevor Neo Yu Hin was born on Dec 9, 2023. His parents, Neo Jia Ming, 24, and Chloe Gan Ci Xuan, 20, had married just four months earlier.

But little Trevor did not live to see his first birthday, having suffered abuse at the hands of his parents within weeks of his birth.

On one occasion, his mother shook him so violently that his fragile neck was bent almost 180 degrees against his little body. On another occasion, his father squeezed his tiny hands so hard that he was left with a purple bruise. His mother also often used his small blanket to silence his cries. Somehow, Trevor found strength to resist, managing to push the cloth away.

But he was just a baby.

On Sept 1, 2024, his mother repeatedly smothered him to stop his cries, suffocating him until she lost strength in both her arms. When he finally fell silent, she went to sleep while her husband continued to play games on his phone.

Little Trevor was pronounced dead the following day.

On Oct 21, Neo was sentenced to 16 years’ jail and Gan to 15 years and three months’ jail. As Justice Hoo Sheau Peng wrote in the judgment: “Trevor spent nearly the entirety of his short life enduring parental abuse before he lost his life.”

Trevor was just eight months old.

After Gan is discharged from the hospital with her son, she moves in with her parents. A confinement nanny is hired to help the 21-year-old mother. Neo stays with them for about two weeks to learn how to care for Trevor.

After the confinement period, Gan, Neo and Trevor return to the Hougang flat they share with Neo’s uncles. Shortly after moving back, Gan realises she can silence Trevor or cause him to lose consciousness by shaking him vigorously. She had earlier seen Neo doing this. The shaking becomes a regular occurrence.

Gan tries to feed Trevor milk, but he does not respond when she taps his chin.

They also discuss Trevor’s cough.

They discuss how to continue shaking Trevor without others finding out.

Neo says Trevor might become mute because of the shaking and searches Google for information on normal feeding patterns.

In the afternoon, Neo returns to the flat, and the couple decide to take Trevor to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH).

Medical examinations reveal no injuries, but hospital admission records state that Gan became upset when Trevor refused to sleep and shook him vigorously from side to side several times at around 7am. The family is referred to a medical social worker. Trevor is discharged under a hospital safety plan.

The nanny cares for Trevor during the day on weekdays, while relatives look after him on weekends.

Sometime before Feb 18, 2024

Neo covers Trevor’s mouth with his hands until the baby vomits milk. Trevor turns purple. Neo tells Gan about the incident and later says he no longer wants to care for Trevor because he fears he might kill him.

At an arcade in a Kallang mall, Neo punches Gan in the back several times for playing a game on her own without waiting for him.

Around March 5, 2024

Neo picks Trevor up from the nanny’s home. The baby cries on the way home, prompting Neo to slap his face two to three times, leaving bruises.

Neo messages Gan telling her to say the bruises were caused by an accident if anyone asks.

The couple later argue over dinner plans, and Neo threatens to blame Gan for Trevor’s bruises. He also threatens to hurt her.

Neo tells Gan about how he grabbed his son’s palm and fingers and squeezed them until they turned purple, leaving a bruise.

They later discuss Trevor’s injured hand again.

Every day for two weeks, Neo covers Trevor’s nose and mouth with his hand whenever the baby cries to make him go to sleep. Gan soon does the same, but with an additional blanket over Trevor's face.

April to August 2024

Gan beats her son on his hands, chest, thighs and buttocks, leaving bruises across his body. Neo witnesses the beatings repeatedly but does not stop her.

Morning Trevor cries as Neo takes him to the nanny’s home. Neo puts his hand into the baby’s mouth and digs around to stop him from crying. Trevor’s frenulum, the tissue under his tongue, starts bleeding. Afternoon The nanny notices Trevor’s mouth is injured and asks Neo what happened. Neo falsely claims he does not know. She insists that Trevor be taken to a doctor. Evening Neo and Gan take Trevor to KKH. The child has some redness under his tongue but is otherwise well. After they leave the hospital, Neo admits that he hurt Trevor.

She warns Gan not to hit him again. But Gan continues to beat him. Separately, Neo punches Gan in the head more than 10 times over a bowl of cereal.

About two to three times a month, Neo pinches Trevor’s fingers forcefully 20 to 30 times. He finds it funny when his son reacts. Gan witnesses this but does not stop him.

By now, Trevor is strong enough to pull the blanket away from his face. His mother then resorts to force. When Trevor cries, she covers his face with the blanket and presses down with her hands for about a minute until he loses consciousness. Neo witnesses this but does not intervene because he does not want the inconvenience of caring for his son.

He does this at least twice because she had left one of Trevor’s toys in Neo’s parents’ home.

He discovers that she has been messaging a male friend. She tells the friend that she plans to divorce Neo. Neo punches Gan in her buttocks, stomach and thigh at least 10 times and slaps her in the face.

7pm Gan returns home with Trevor after picking him up from her parents’ home. Neo and Gan leave their son in the care of Neo’s uncles and go out for dinner. 8pm to 9pm Neo and Gan return, and one of the uncles places Trevor in his cot in the couple’s room. The couple are on their bed, using their phones, when Trevor cries. 9:30pm to 11:30pm Gan goes to the cot and covers Trevor’s face with his blanket. She presses down for close to a minute as he struggles. But when she lifts her hand, Trevor starts crying again. Gan repeats this at least three or four times until her right arm begins trembling. As she does this, she asks Neo: “How? You want the baby to die? “If anything happens, we will go to jail.” Neo says: “Wait for the baby to make noise first then you try again.” Trevor falls silent for a minute. Gan leaves the blanket on his face and returns to her side of the bed while Neo continues playing games on his phone. Trevor cries again. Gan presses down hard with both hands on the blanket covering his face. She does this until both her arms lose strength and she nearly falls into the cot. Trevor continues crying. Gan flips the baby face down and leaves him there. She then goes to sleep. Trevor falls silent. Neo is aware of what has happened but does not intervene. 11:30pm Neo finishes his mobile game and checks on Trevor. His son is not breathing, and his hands are cold. Neo wakes Gan and tells her to check on Trevor. Gan lifts him out of the cot. The baby is unresponsive. They try to resuscitate Trevor, but he has no pulse. The couple leave for KKH with the child.

12:42am A nurse makes a police report. 8:10am Neo and Gan are arrested.

10月21日，Neo被判处16年监禁，Gan被判处15年零3个月监禁。正如胡秀萍法官在判决书中写道：“Trevor在失去生命之前，在他短暂的一生中几乎一直遭受着父母的虐待。”

特雷弗当时只有八个月大。

甘带着儿子出院后，搬回父母家住。他们请了一位月嫂来帮助这位21岁的母亲。妮奥在他们家住了大约两周，学习如何照顾特雷弗。

禁闭期结束后，甘、妮奥和特雷弗回到了他们和妮奥的叔叔们合住的后港公寓。搬回去不久，甘就发现她可以通过用力摇晃特雷弗来让他安静下来，甚至让他昏过去。她之前看到妮奥这样做过。摇晃特雷弗成了家常便饭。

甘想喂特雷弗喝牛奶，但当她轻拍他的下巴时，他却没有反应。

他们还讨论了特雷弗的咳嗽。

他们商量着如何在不被其他人发现的情况下继续骚扰特雷弗。

尼奥说特雷弗可能会因为颤抖而失语，于是他在谷歌上搜索有关正常喂养模式的信息。

下午，Neo回到公寓，这对夫妇决定带Trevor去KK妇女儿童医院（KKH）。

体检显示特雷弗未受伤，但入院记录显示，早上7点左右，特雷弗拒绝睡觉，甘因此情绪激动，多次用力摇晃他。家属被转介给医疗社工。特雷弗在医院制定的安全计划下出院。

工作日白天由保姆照顾特雷弗，周末则由亲戚照顾。

在2024年2月18日之前某个时间

尼奥用手捂住特雷弗的嘴，直到婴儿吐出奶水。特雷弗脸色发紫。尼奥把这件事告诉了甘，后来又说他不想再照顾特雷弗了，因为他害怕特雷弗会害死他。

在加冷购物中心的一家游戏厅里，Neo因为Gan没有等他，就独自玩游戏，而多次打了Gan的背部。

大约在2024年3月5日

尼奥去保姆家接特雷弗。回家的路上，孩子哭闹不止，尼奥一怒之下扇了他两三个耳光，脸上留下了淤青。

Neo 发信息告诉 Gan，如果有人问起，就说瘀伤是意外造成的。

这对情侣后来因为晚餐安排争吵起来，尼奥威胁要把特雷弗身上的瘀伤归咎于甘，他还威胁要伤害她。

Neo告诉Gan，他如何抓住儿子的手掌和手指，用力挤压，直到它们变紫，留下瘀伤。

他们后来再次谈到了特雷弗受伤的手。

连续两周，每当特雷弗哭闹哄他睡觉时，尼奥每天都会用手捂住他的口鼻。不久后，甘也效仿，只是在特雷弗的脸上又盖了一层毯子。

2024年4月至8月

甘殴打儿子，手、胸、大腿和臀部都打得遍体鳞伤。尼奥多次目睹这一切，却始终没有阻止。

早上，尼奥带特雷弗去保姆家时，特雷弗哭个不停。尼奥把手伸进孩子的嘴里，摸索着想让他停止哭泣。特雷弗的舌系带（舌头下方的组织）开始出血。下午，保姆发现特雷弗的嘴受伤了，问尼奥发生了什么事。尼奥谎称不知道。保姆坚持要带特雷弗去看医生。晚上，尼奥和甘带特雷弗去了KKH医院。孩子舌头下方有些发红，但除此之外一切正常。离开医院后，尼奥承认是他弄伤了特雷弗。

她警告甘不要再打他，但甘继续殴打他。另一次，妮奥因为一碗麦片，朝甘的头打了十多拳。

尼奥大约每月两到三次，会用力捏特雷弗的手指二三十次。他觉得儿子的反应很有趣。甘目睹了这一切，但并没有阻止他。

此时，特雷弗已经力气大到可以把毯子从脸上扯下来。他的母亲只好采取强硬手段。特雷弗哭了起来，她用毯子捂住他的脸，双手按住大约一分钟，直到他失去知觉。尼奥目睹了这一切，但他没有出手相助，因为他不想承担照顾儿子的麻烦。

他至少这样做了两次，因为她把特雷弗的一个玩具落在了尼奥父母家。

他发现她一直在和一个男性朋友发短信。她告诉那个朋友她打算和Neo离婚。Neo至少打了Gan的臀部、腹部和大腿10拳，还扇了她耳光。

晚上7点，甘从父母家接了特雷弗后带着他回家。尼奥和甘把儿子托付给尼奥的叔叔们照顾，然后出去吃饭。晚上8点到9点，尼奥和甘回来，其中一位叔叔把特雷弗放在他们房间的婴儿床上。两人躺在床上玩手机，这时特雷弗哭了起来。晚上9点半到11点半，甘走到婴儿床边，用毯子盖住特雷弗的脸。她按压了将近一分钟，特雷弗挣扎着。但当她抬起手时，特雷弗又开始哭了起来。甘重复了至少三四次，直到她的右臂开始颤抖。她一边这样做，一边问尼奥：“怎么回事？你想让孩子死吗？如果出了什么事，我们就要坐牢了。”尼奥说：“等孩子先哭出来再试试。”特雷弗安静了一会儿。甘把毯子盖在他脸上，回到自己那边的床边，而尼奥则继续玩手机游戏。特雷弗又哭了起来。甘用双手用力按住盖在他脸上的毯子。她一直按压，直到双臂无力，几乎跌倒在婴儿床上。特雷弗继续哭。甘把孩子翻过来，让他脸朝下，然后自己睡着了。特雷弗安静了下来。尼奥知道发生了什么，但没有干预。晚上11点30分，尼奥玩完手机游戏，去看特雷弗。他的儿子没有呼吸，双手冰凉。尼奥叫醒甘，让她去看看特雷弗。甘把孩子从婴儿床上抱起来。孩子没有反应。他们试图抢救特雷弗，但他没有脉搏。这对夫妇带着孩子去了竹脚妇幼医院。

凌晨12点42分，一名护士向警方报案。上午8点10分，Neo和Gan被捕。
