If you have seen advertisements on Facebook featuring police officers promoting scam recovery services, best be wary not to click on them — or you could fall victim to a scam yourself.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Friday (Oct 23) warned of a recent surge in fake Facebook advertisements featuring AI-generated images of police officers promoting scam recovery services.
Users who click on these fake advertisements will be directed to an online form, requesting their contact details.
After that, users will be prompted to provide a One-Time Password (OTP) sent to them via WhatsApp or SMS.
Users may then end up compromising and disclosing their personal credentials or may even accidentally allow unauthorised access to their accounts, said police.
The police have advised members of the public to adopt the A.C.T method - Add, Check and Tell, to safeguard themselves and the community.
Members of the public are encouraged to add the ScamShield app to block scam calls and filter dodgy SMSes, before using the app to check for scam signs.
Should members of public encounter any scam themselves, they are advised to immediately inform their bank before reporting any fraudulent transactions to the authorities.
