The USS Abraham Lincoln left Thailand on Sunday after nearly 5,000 US sailors and Marines poured into Pattaya following 286 days at sea, spending heavily across shops, restaurants, hotels, bars and local services. The five-day visit delivered a major low-season windfall, produced striking stories of ฿1,000 and ฿2,000 tips, and sent some retail sales surging. Yet the sailors also surprised many locals by spreading their spending far beyond nightlife, while workers repeatedly described them as polite, disciplined and generous. After months of combat operations linked to Iran, their first substantial break ashore brought money, momentum and a rare burst of optimism to Pattaya.

The USS Abraham Lincoln sailed from Thailand on Sunday after a successful five-day visit to Chonburi and Pattaya. Nearly 5,000 US sailors and Marines came ashore during the port call. For many, it was their first substantial break in months. The giant carrier had arrived at Laem Chabang on September 2. Its crew had endured 286 consecutive days at sea. Notably, the deployment included a key role in US military operations against Iran.
However, the lasting Pattaya story was not about warships, geopolitics or military operations. It was about what happened ashore. Within hours, stories about American generosity began spreading across Thai social media.
Taxi drivers posted about large tips. Food delivery riders shared similar experiences. Hotel workers also recalled generous American guests. In parallel, ordinary workers began swapping accounts of unexpected windfalls.
US sailors leave large tips as Pattaya workers share stories of unexpected generosity and fresh spending
One Grab driver attracted particular attention after carrying a US serviceman in Pattaya. The fare was only ฿120. Yet the American reportedly handed over ฿1,000. The driver then posted a public thank-you message online. That story quickly travelled across Thai social media. Soon afterwards, other workers began relating similar encounters with visiting servicemen.
Separately, two US servicemen staying at a private pool villa ordered food through Grab. When the delivery arrived, the driver reportedly received a ฿2,000 tip. Again, the recipient went online with the story. Another hotel worker recalled receiving tips between ฿1,000 and ฿2,000 from American customers. Taken together, the accounts became a striking feature of the visit.
For the servicemen, those amounts represented relatively modest holiday spending. For Thai service workers, the comparison was different. The ฿1,000 payment exceeded the original Grab fare more than eight times. Meanwhile, the reported ฿2,000 delivery tip was larger still. Consequently, small transactions became some of the most discussed moments of the port call.
The Americans had also arrived after almost ten months without normal opportunities to spend money ashore. Thousands had remained aboard ship throughout that extraordinary period. Then, within hours, they found themselves in Pattaya. Restaurants were open. Shopping centres were waiting. Hotels, taxis, salons and entertainment venues stood ready for business.
At the same time, Pattaya businesses badly wanted the extra trade. September is normally a quieter tourism period. Several operators had also described 2026 as difficult. The Middle East conflict had further affected international tourism. Against that backdrop, thousands of spending customers created an immediate injection of activity.
Sailors spread money far beyond Pattaya nightlife as shops, restaurants and attractions gain strongly
The biggest surprise concerned where much of that money went. Pattaya remains internationally famous for nightlife, beer bars and its sex industry. Nevertheless, many USS Abraham Lincoln sailors appeared equally interested in ordinary comforts. They bought clothes, shoes and socks. Others purchased gifts for their families. Many ate large meals, booked pedicures or visited shopping centres.
On another front, some sailors ordered tailored suits or planned trips along Thailand’s eastern seaboard. Restaurants benefited. So did taxis, hotels, massage businesses, tattoo studios and retailers. Certainly, many sailors also visited Pattaya’s bars. Walking Street attracted groups throughout the port call. Even so, nightlife represented only part of their spending.
Local tourism representatives later stressed that broader pattern. They said the sailors spread money across restaurants, shopping, attractions and other businesses. Their spending was not concentrated entirely on nightlife. Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet made similar observations during the visit. He saw sailors travelling throughout the city, both individually and in groups.
In addition, the mayor said servicemen visited cultural attractions and other tourist destinations. They ate in restaurants and shopped throughout Pattaya. International journalists independently encountered much the same pattern. The Guardian found sailors seeking remarkably simple comforts after 286 uninterrupted days at sea.
Simple comforts drive sailor spending as shops, salons and retailers enjoy a sudden low-season surge
One sailor was shopping for new socks at Vans. Another bought a Hello Kitty soft toy from H&M for his wife. Elsewhere, another sailor wanted a tailored suit. Others were mainly interested in fresh food. The examples were striking because they contrasted sharply with Pattaya’s traditional international image.
At Pattaya’s Colour Nail salon, the spending surge was visible immediately. Every burgundy lounger was occupied on Thursday morning. Male and female sailors sat down for pedicures. More waited outside for their turn. Salon worker Arisa Suekkanya said she was “excited” by their arrival. Thailand was their first port call after 286 days continuously at sea.
Retail businesses recorded equally clear evidence. American Eagle provided one of the strongest examples. Employee Puangbubpha Duangsri said the shop normally made around ฿70,000 daily during low season. After the sailors arrived on Wednesday, sales exceeded ฿200,000. By lunchtime Thursday, another ฿100,000 had already passed through the tills.
“Can they stay an extra week?” she asked.
Meanwhile, Nike, Victoria’s Secret and Starbucks also reported stronger sales. The spending surge therefore extended far beyond Pattaya’s neon-lit entertainment streets. It was visible inside shopping centres. It appeared in restaurants and personal services. More directly, it also reached taxi drivers and food delivery riders.
Pattaya businesses roll out Navy discounts as workers praise sailors as polite, orderly and generous
Businesses responded quickly. Many displayed signs welcoming US Navy personnel. Others introduced military discounts. Thai restaurant Imm-Oon Na offered 10% off for customers showing valid military identification. Tailor Tito Fashion advertised rapid service “specially for US Navy”. As part of this, entertainment venues launched their own promotions.
At Walking Street, a huge illuminated sign welcomed the USS Abraham Lincoln and its personnel. Sapphire Club offered US service members a 10% discount. Bars increased staffing. Restaurants prepared for larger groups. Transport operators handled increased demand. Across the city, businesses adapted rapidly to thousands of new customers.
Still, reports from workers repeatedly moved beyond simple sales figures. Many described the visitors as polite, orderly and generous. A Pattaya business owner interviewed by ITV News said American military visitors were usually respectful. Accordingly, the owner had not been particularly worried about serious trouble.
Massage worker Nattakamol Chartmontri offered another clear assessment. She described many Lincoln sailors as “young, well-behaved and rule-abiding”. Her experience also provided an important qualification. She said her sector had not received the spectacular windfall suggested by some social media accounts.
Spending gains prove uneven as some retailers surge while others see little change from Navy crowds
Indeed, the economic benefit was uneven. Some businesses enjoyed exceptional sales. Others saw little change. Night-market trader Emma Moontee offered one example. She said she had sold only one refrigerator magnet to a sailor. Even then, she hoped more Americans would arrive before the carrier departed.
By contrast, major retailers recorded dramatic increases. American Eagle’s figures showed the scale most clearly. Its normal low-season turnover was around ฿70,000 daily. After the sailors arrived, Wednesday sales exceeded ฿200,000. Before Thursday lunchtime ended, another ฿100,000 had already been recorded.
The mayor had expected a substantial overall boost. Poramet estimated each American might spend between US$100 and US$150 daily. Based on that figure, he projected around ฿100 million in local economic activity. Importantly, that spending arrived during a weaker tourism period.
Restaurant owner Kosol Homkhunthod said the Americans had “created a buzz”. His assessment followed what he described as a very slow period. Elsewhere, nightlife businesses also reported stronger trade. Thousands of sailors and Marines moved through Pattaya during several days of shore leave.
From early evening, groups appeared throughout major entertainment districts. Walking Street remained an important destination. However, crew members had reportedly been advised against visiting Soi 6 after sunset. Wittaya Phoobantad works at Poker Bar on the beachfront. He said sailors could clearly be seen around the area.
Walking Street draws sailors but their cautious behaviour contrasts sharply with Pattaya’s old image
“You can see [sailors] walking around but because Soi 6 is banned most of them don’t come in, just go direct to Walking Street.”
Further south, Walking Street venues were waiting for them. Pattana Prasomsup works at M’s Mojito. He said ten crew members visited the bar on Wednesday night. Their presence provided a “good boost”. He also noticed something else. The sailors appeared cautious about interacting with bar girls.
That observation cut directly across Pattaya’s long-established stereotype. The resort has been associated with American servicemen for six decades. In fact, the connection helped shape modern Pattaya. The former fishing community changed rapidly during the Vietnam War period. American military personnel began arriving for rest and recreation.
As a result, hotels, bars, massage parlours and entertainment businesses expanded rapidly. Heavy drinking and paid female companionship became closely connected with Pattaya’s developing tourism industry. Over subsequent decades, that image travelled around the world.
Today, however, Pattaya has a far broader tourism economy. It contains major shopping centres, international retailers, large hotels and countless restaurants. It also offers beaches, attractions and personal services. The Lincoln visit demonstrated how widely American spending could now spread.
Retailers, restaurants and workers share in wider spending as sailors challenge Pattaya stereotypes
To be sure, beer bars and entertainment venues received plenty of American customers. Yet international fashion chains also benefited. Restaurants did well. Nail salons filled. Tailors promoted rapid turnaround services. Independent taxi drivers and delivery riders also shared directly in the spending.
Pattaya Mail later highlighted that broader distribution. Tourism representatives said personnel “spread their spending across restaurants, shopping, attractions and other businesses rather than concentrating entirely on nightlife.” A former Pattaya bar worker also recalled American servicemen as “friendly, orderly and generous with tips”.
Those descriptions closely matched reports emerging during the Lincoln visit. The ฿1,000 Grab payment became one widely shared example. The ฿2,000 delivery tip became another. Hotel workers added their own accounts. Consequently, the spending story reached well beyond company sales figures.
For individual workers, the sums were immediate and personal. A sailor after almost ten months at sea might view ฿1,000 differently. For a driver collecting ฿120, the payment represented a major multiple of the fare. That contrast helped propel the stories online.
At the same time, the Americans were recovering from an extraordinary stretch aboard ship. One sailor described stepping ashore after the deployment. “A load came off my shoulders,” he said. Another called the deployment “tough” but added that the crew had a job to perform.
After 286 days at sea, sailors seek fresh food, simple comforts and several hours away from ship life
Food also featured heavily in sailors’ accounts. One serviceman described eating freely after reaching Thailand. “Me and Thai food might be best friends after this,” he said. Another sailor described difficulties with food during the deployment. He recalled eating “uncooked beef” and sliced, uncooked potato.
According to several crew members, conditions worsened during periods of sustained combat operations. One described the “battle rhythm” imposed during Operation Epic Fury. Restocking could become difficult during those periods. The carrier’s captain acknowledged shortages of fresh fruit and vegetables.
However, the captain disputed wider reports concerning poor living conditions aboard ship. Crew members nevertheless agreed the deployment had been unusually long. They had spent 286 uninterrupted days at sea before arriving in Thailand.
For that reason, many sailors concentrated on simple pleasures once ashore. Fresh food mattered. Clean clothes mattered. Shopping mattered. For some, it was a pedicure. For others, it was a new pair of socks. Some bought gifts for wives and family members.
Elsewhere, sailors simply relaxed beside swimming pools. They ordered food and enjoyed several hours away from shipboard routines. In one reported case, that ordinary food order produced a ฿2,000 tip for the driver.
Pattaya mounts a major welcome and security effort as nearly 5,000 servicemen come ashore peacefully
Pattaya had prepared heavily for precisely this level of activity. Businesses increased staffing before the first large groups arrived. Welcome signs appeared throughout the resort. Restaurants introduced discounts. Tailors advertised directly to Navy personnel. Nightlife venues also prepared for large crowds.
In response, transport operators moved personnel between Laem Chabang and Pattaya. Hotels handled additional demand. Restaurants and shops extended their welcome. The entire operation created several days of concentrated spending across the resort.
Security preparations were equally extensive. Police, tourist police and municipal personnel maintained patrols across major tourism areas. Officers concentrated particularly on entertainment districts. Their role included keeping order, assisting visitors and preventing disputes.
Despite almost 5,000 servicemen coming ashore, serious problems largely failed to materialise. One drunken altercation involving two sailors attracted public attention. Pattaya police chief Colonel Anek Srathongyoo described the incident as “trivial”. Neither sailor was charged with breaking Thai law.
Minor trouble fades as spending, sales and generous tips dominate Pattaya’s account of the Navy visit
Instead, the US Navy returned both men to their ship. AFP reported no other significant incidents at that stage. Thus, concerns about widespread disorder never developed into a major issue.
Attention instead shifted towards spending and behaviour. Drivers talked about tips. Retailers talked about sales. Restaurant owners talked about additional customers. Tourism representatives highlighted how widely the money moved through the city.
That distribution remained uneven. Some businesses enjoyed a bumper week. Others saw few sailors. Nonetheless, the strongest retail figures showed a clear surge. American Eagle more than doubled its normal daily sales after the Americans arrived.
The smallest transactions, however, attracted the greatest public attention. A ฿120 journey became a ฿1,000 payment. A routine food delivery reportedly generated a ฿2,000 tip. Thai workers then shared those experiences widely online.
During the same period, sailors continued spreading throughout Pattaya. They ate, shopped and drank. They bought clothes, gifts and personal items. They visited salons. They ordered tailored suits. They also travelled outside the traditional nightlife areas.
Broader spending across Pattaya leaves a measurable low-season boost before the carrier sails away
The result was a broader economic picture than Pattaya’s old reputation suggests. Walking Street was busy. Bars welcomed the visitors. Massage shops and tattoo studios gained customers. Yet substantial spending also reached retail, food, transport and accommodation.
For Pattaya businesses, the timing was significant. The resort was passing through a quieter tourism period. Several operators had already reported weak conditions during 2026. Into that environment came nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines with accumulated spending power.
The concentration was unusual. So was the length of their deployment. They had spent almost ten months without normal shore spending. For several days, Pattaya became their outlet for food, shopping, recreation and rest.
By Sunday, that short burst of activity was over. The USS Abraham Lincoln departed Thailand after completing its port call. Captain Dan Keeler thanked Thailand and the Thai people for their hospitality. The US Embassy said nearly 5,000 sailors and Marines had explored the country.
The carrier then returned to US Seventh Fleet operations. Pattaya, however, was left with hard evidence of the visit. Retailers recorded sharp sales increases. Restaurants gained customers. Hotels, taxis and delivery drivers collected extra business.
Workers, retailers and venues count the gains as American visitors leave money and few problems behind
Entertainment venues also benefited. More strikingly, ordinary workers carried away stories they considered exceptional enough to publish online. Those accounts usually concerned simple transactions rather than lavish spending.
One passenger paid ฿1,000 for a ฿120 Grab journey. Two servicemen reportedly tipped a food delivery rider ฿2,000. A hotel worker recalled American tips reaching ฿2,000. Meanwhile, one clothing store increased daily sales from around ฿70,000 to more than ฿200,000.
Together, those figures captured the breadth of the spending surge. They also showed how differently the same dollars landed across Pattaya. Major retailers counted higher turnover. Individual workers sometimes received tips worth many times the original charge.
Equally, the security operation ended with little serious trouble. The one publicised drunken confrontation produced no Thai criminal charges. Instead, workers repeatedly described the sailors as polite and disciplined. Others emphasised their generosity.
After 286 days continuously at sea, the Americans certainly wanted beer and entertainment. But they also wanted burgers, Thai food and fresh clothes. They wanted socks and gifts. Some wanted pedicures or tailored suits. Others simply wanted hours beside a pool.
Citywide spending, strong tips and polite conduct define the final impression left by US Navy visitors
Most importantly for Pattaya businesses, they spent across the city rather than one narrow strip. Bars received money. So did shops. Restaurants, hotels, taxis, salons and delivery riders also benefited.
By Sunday, the aircraft carrier was gone. The sales figures, worker accounts and social media stories remained. For several days, almost 5,000 American sailors and Marines had poured into Pattaya.
They visited the bars, as expected. Yet they also spent heavily across the wider resort. That broader spending became the defining business story of the USS Abraham Lincoln visit.
The visit by the US Navy force undoubtedly landed a financial windfall for Pattaya. However, it also brought with it something that is presently in short supply in Thailand at the grassroots level of the economy. A spirit of hope, optimism and, most importantly, generosity.
