The National Transport Workers' Union's (NTWU) has refreshed its canteens and introduced a vending machine service for public transport workers.

Known as Kaki 24hr, it gives workers continued access to hot meals, snacks, beverages, and daily essentials even when regular canteen services may not be available.

The first Kaki 24hr is now in operation at East Coast Bus Depot, where it will benefit around 350 public transport workers there.

NTWU said on Monday (Oct 26) that its enhanced canteen services and offerings will better support the needs of workers.

"This includes taking into consideration an ageing workforce, increasingly varied work hours, greater emphasis on health and wellness, and workers' day-to-day cost-of-living needs," it added.

There are currently over 50 Kaki Point canteens.

NTWU said a range of affordable household and personal essentials will progressively be offered under Kaki 24hr, giving workers greater convenience while helping with expenses management.

The union plans to roll out Kaki 24hr at five more bus and train depots by the third quarter of 2027, to serve another 3,000 workers in the public transport workforce.

"Since our early canteens, the idea has always been very simple: to take care of the people who keep Singapore moving," said NTWU executive secretary Yeo Wan Ling.

Yeo, who is MP for Punggol GRC, said the union has heard concerns from workers on wellness and the pressures of everyday living.

"Our welfare support must evolve with them," she stated.

"Kaki Point and Kaki 24hr are about bringing that support closer to our workers, whether it is a hot meal during a short break, something they need after the canteen has closed, or affordable everyday essentials that help them stretch the dollar."
