The main Merlion statue at the Merlion Park at One Fullerton Singapore will undergo cleaning and repair works from Nov 24 to 26, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) said.

In its advisory issued on Tuesday (Oct 27), the board said that it will be covered in scaffolding and will not be available for taking photos during maintenance.

"We seek the public’s understanding as the works and barricades may cause some inconvenience during this period," STB said, adding that members of the public can still take photos with the nearby 2m-tall Merlion cub statue.

The main statue last underwent minor maintenance on Sept 8.

During a run of unhealthy to very unhealthy air quality between Oct 5 and 17, there were times when the iconic statue was set against a hazy backdrop.

The Merlion statue was made by local sculptor Lim Nan Seng, based on a blue print by artist Kwan Sai Kheong.

It was unveiled on Sept 15, 1972 by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew as part of the waterfront Merlion Park located at the mouth of the Singapore River.

In 2002, it was relocated to its current location at One Fullerton after the completion of Esplanade Bridge in 1997, which meant it could no longer be viewed clearly from the waterfront.

Its unveiling at the current spot was again graced by then Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew on Sept 15, 2002.

Including the main Merlion statue and the cub at Merlion Park, there are four other official Merlion statues across Singapore.

They can be found outside the STB headquarters, at Faber Point on Mount Faber, and at the entrance of a carpark near Block 216 to 222 in Ang Mo Kio.
