KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 — Malaysia will still face billions of ringgit in losses from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal even if ongoing legal efforts succeed in recovering more stolen funds, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan told Parliament today.
The sums recovered would still fall short of erasing the financial damage inflicted on the country, Amir said, despite the government’s strong legal position in pursuing further asset recoveries and compensation.
“Although there is good potential for additional recovery based on the strength of the government’s case to claim compensation from responsible parties, this additional recovery will not put an end to the 1MDB losses or reduce the multi-billion-ringgit losses borne by the country,” he told the Dewan Rakyat.
Putrajaya had spent RM42.5 billion as of August 31, 2026, servicing principal debt, interest and other financing costs linked to the scandal.
Amir said the government remained liable for another RM8.9 billion in obligations under government-guaranteed Islamic Medium-Term Notes (IMTN), comprising RM5 billion in principal and RM3.9 billion in interest, with the principal due to mature in 2039.
This brings the total amount paid and outstanding to RM51.4 billion, Amir told Parliament.
The government has recovered RM31.3 billion in funds and assets linked to 1MDB, leaving an estimated net financial burden of RM20.1 billion if no further recoveries are made.
Amir said the 2039 maturity date applied only to the sukuk principal and should not be construed as a deadline for settling all outstanding claims or recovering assets.
The timeframe for further recoveries would depend on court decisions and enforcement proceedings in Malaysia and abroad.
The financial obligations also do not account for the broader economic toll of the scandal.
Amir said the scandal had likely undermined confidence in Malaysia’s governance, with investors concerned about the systemic impact of corruption exposed by the multi-billion-dollar sovereign wealth fund scandal.
