A 29-year-old Singaporean man was jailed after he was found to have stolen about S$11,000 from donation boxes at a coffeeshop in Geylang.

Manohar s/o Thirunavukkarasu pleaded guilty to two charges of theft, with another charge taken into consideration during sentencing.

He told investigators that he had already spent most of the money and only S$166 and some foreign currency were recovered when he was arrested.

On Tuesday (Oct 27), Manohar was sentenced to four months and four weeks in prison for his crimes.

How the theft occurred

On June 13, an employee of Kuan Tzi Zhai Vegetarian Cuisine had forgotten to place the cart containing 10 donation boxes back into the stall as she was closing up for the day.

A few hours later, at about 1.48am, Manohar happened to pass by the coffeeshop. Upon spotting the donation boxes, he was prompted to steal them.

According to Lianhe Zaobao, Manohar took a large pail used for dirty dishes from nearby, placed the donation boxes into it and pushed it away on the trolley.

He then wheeled the trolley along Sims Avenue, towards Aljunied MRT station.

He then forcibly pried open the boxes and stole about S$11,000 in cash.

Not his first offence

This was not Manohar's first theft.

Prior to the S$11,000 theft, according to court documents, Manohar had stolen from a Shine Korea outlet located in Bras Basah.

Less than a month before his Geylang theft, Manohar had stolen a packet of Samyang Hot Chicken Ramen and a cup of Samyang Hot Chicken Bowl, worth a total of $9.60.

Manohar was also charged under the Private Security Industry Act for sleeping on the grounds outside the School of the Arts Singapore (SOTA) and for harassing a security guard on the premises.

According to court documents, he hurled insults at the security guard when he was asked to leave.

This prompted the on-duty security guard to call the police, who then recognised after arriving on-site that Manohar was wanted in connection with the $11,000 missing from the Geylang coffeeshop.

During investigations, Manohar revealed that he had used about S$10,000 to pay off drug debts and had spent the remaining S$1,000 on personal expenses.

The money was meant to be donated to various organisations, including Singapore Chung Hwa Medical Institution, Ren Ci Hospital and Thye Hua Kwan Hospital, said Lianhe Zaobao.
