Over a year after a restaurant worker resigned, he allegedly broke into the residence he once shared with his ex-colleagues and stole pieces of gold jewellery worth about $60,000.

Deva Seelan Sati Veloo, a Malaysian national, is accused of committing theft at Block 107 Spottiswoode Park Road on March 28 this year, reported Shin Min Daily News.

The 38-year-old was formerly employed at the popular eatery Outram Park Ya Hua Bak Kut Teh.

Eatery boss Lin Fulai (transliteration), 44, told the Chinese publication that Deva had moved out of the Tanjong Pagar HDB flat when he left the job in December 2024.

On March 28, two of his employees living in the rented flat realised their gold jewellery had gone missing.

Speaking to Shin Min, employee Liew Kai Sin said his gold chain, bought after years of saving, was stolen.

"There was no sign that the room had been ransacked. When the police asked if we suspected someone we knew, we thought it might have been Deva," he said.

According to court records, Deva has been in remand since April 25 and is expected to plead guilty at a hearing scheduled for Nov 10.

A charge sheet stated that the man had allegedly committed housebreaking between 1.43pm and 2pm and stole four pieces of gold jewellery, including the necklace belonging to Liew valued at $30,500.

The boss, Lin, shared that Deva worked at the eatery for about five years.

Although hardworking, he told Shin Min that Deva had occasionally requested a salary advance of a few hundred dollars.

Lin added that Deva had once taken two weeks' leave to prepare for his newborn, then allegedly claimed his child had died and asked for another week's leave.

"The photo was obviously fake," he said. "His baby was just born, but the child in the photo looked to be two or three years old. After I exposed him, he came back and resigned."
