Houthis accuse Saudi Arabia of killing seven in Yemen prison attack

Houthi media outlet released footage of destruction and rescue efforts after the Saudi air strike on al-Hazm prison.

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have accused Saudi Arabia of carrying out an air strike on a prison in the northern city of al-Hazm, killing seven people, including a child.

The strike on the Central Corrective Facility in al-Jawf province, on the Yemeni side of the border with Saudi Arabia, also wounded at least seven people, including a woman, Anees al-Asbahi, a spokesperson for the Houthi-run Health Ministry, said on Monday.

The Houthi-run Al Masirah TV channel aired footage it said showed the aftermath of the alleged attack, including a collapsed building and people searching through the rubble.

Saudi Arabia has not commented on the allegations.

Al Masirah TV also released footage it claims shows Houthi forces using ballistic missiles to attack Saudi supply trucks containing military equipment at a border crossing in Yemen’s Hadramout province.

Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree accused Saudi Arabia of “committing massacres” in al-Jawf, flying reconnaissance drones and supplying mercenaries with weaponry.

“The ongoing Saudi aggression against Yemen will not go unpunished, and the Saudi enemy must bear the consequences of its crimes against the Yemeni people,” he said.

Saree also claimed that the Houthis had shot down four Saudi reconnaissance drones over the previous 24 hours, including a CH-4 drone that he said was carrying out “hostile missions” in al-Jawf.

“This aircraft is the second of this type that was shot down during the past 12 hours, and the fourth during the past 24 hours,” he added.

Dually, Riyadh has not commented on Saree’s allegations.

The Houthi claims come as fighting between the group and Yemen’s internationally recognised government has flared up in recent weeks. The Yemeni government said it made significant territorial gains against the Houthis, including in the al-Jawf, Bayda, Dahle, and Marib provinces on Sunday.

Over the past days, government-aligned forces conducted counterattacks in Taiz and Hodeidah after the Houthis launched a major offensive in a struggle to control the critical Bab al-Mandeb strait, with hundreds of people reportedly killed over the past 24 hours.

Air strikes on prisons have occurred several times during Yemen’s decade-long war. In 2022, the Saudi-led coalition struck a detention facility in Saada province, killing at least 87 prisoners and wounding about 266 others.

In 2019, the coalition struck a Houthi-run detention facility in Dhamar province, killing more than 100 people and wounding dozens.

胡塞武装控制的马西拉电视台播放了据称是袭击事件发生后的画面，包括一栋倒塌的建筑物和人们在废墟中搜寻的场景。

沙特阿拉伯尚未对此事发表评论。

马西拉电视台还发布了一段视频，声称视频显示胡塞武装使用弹道导弹袭击了也门哈德拉毛省边境口岸运送军事装备的沙特补给卡车。

胡塞武装发言人叶海亚·萨里指责沙特阿拉伯在焦夫省“犯下屠杀罪行”，并派出侦察无人机向雇佣兵提供武器。

他说：“沙特阿拉伯对也门的持续侵略不会逍遥法外，沙特敌人必须承担其对也门人民犯下的罪行的后果。”

萨里还声称，胡塞武装在过去 24 小时内击落了四架沙特侦察无人机，其中包括一架 CH-4 无人机，他说这架无人机正在焦夫执行“敌对任务”。

“这是过去 12 小时内被击落的第二架同类型飞机，也是过去 24 小时内被击落的第四架同类型飞机，”他补充道。

同时，利雅得方面尚未对萨莉的指控作出回应。

胡塞武装发表上述声明之际，该组织与也门国际公认的政府之间的冲突在最近几周愈演愈烈。也门政府周日表示，其在包括焦夫省、贝达省、达赫勒省和马里卜省在内的多个地区对胡塞武装取得了重大领土胜利。
