A group of friends spent $1,000 buying out a Bedok minimart's stock to help its elderly owner call it a day early, but she had other plans - joining them in distributing the food to residents instead.

Taking to social media on Friday (Oct 30), one of the friends, who goes by the name Jay Tan, shared the heartwarming gesture, explaining that the group had wanted to buy out a minimart aunty's stock and distribute the goods to charity.

In the video , Tan is heard explaining that the items were being bought for charity before approaching the stall owner and handing her cash. He also tells her that she can rest early for the day.

However, he later shared that the owner had expressed interest in joining them to distribute the items to nearby residents.

Speaking to Stomp, Tan, 24, identified the stall owner as Aunty Allyson, 65, who runs Miao Yin Organic & Vegetarian Mart at 16 Bedok South Road.

Hoping to lend her a helping hand, Tan said he and four friends visited her stall on Oct 25 and offered to purchase all her remaining stock.

He said Allyson was initially "speechless" when they made the offer, before becoming "really excited".

'We didn't expect her to take off her apron'

The group spent $1,000 on three cartons of food and supplies, and took some time to chat with Allyson before heading out to distribute the items.

"What stood out to us was how happy running the stall makes her. She loves sharing the benefits of vegetarian food with customers who don't usually eat vegetarian, and she says she also learns a lot about vegetables from her customers in return," said Tan.

"In her words, it's a two-way exchange: she shares with them, and they teach her too."

The group had initially planned to give the food to residents living nearby. However, Allyson surprised them by volunteering to join in the distribution.

"We didn't expect her to take off her apron and say 'I'm coming too'," Tan wrote in the video's caption.

The TikTok video shows Allyson leading the way along a common corridor in an HDB, while Tan pushes a carton of food behind her.

The pair are then seen handing out food to several families, before the encounter ends with Allyson giving Tan a hug.

"Seeing her so excited to hand out food to strangers reminded me that kindness spreads when you give people the chance to be part of it," Tan told Stomp.
