BN banks on five-year track record to win fence-sitters at Melaka polls

MELAKA, Nov 1 — Barisan Nasional (BN) is confident that the achievements and performance of the state administration over the past five years will be among the key factors considered by fence-sitters in determining their choice of candidate in the Melaka state election on November 14.

Melaka BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ab Rauf Yusoh said these voters would assess the party based on its ability to administer the state, as well as the effectiveness of policies and initiatives that directly benefit the people.

“Fence-sitters look at the direction of a party that will be given the mandate to administer a state or country.

“So they will look at what we have delivered to the people while administering the state before making their choice,” he told reporters after inspecting the preparations of the BN election machinery at the Telok Mas state constituency operations room here today.

Ab Rauf, who is also Chief Minister, said approaches taken by the state government to win over the group included the Wakil Rakyat Untuk Rakyat (WRUR), Hari Exco Bertemu Rakyat and Jelajah Ketua Menteri Sayang Rakyat programmes, which focus on identifying and resolving various issues faced by the people.

He said the implementation of the initiatives demonstrated the state government’s commitment to ensuring that every plan and policy was translated into action that benefits the community.

Ab Rauf said that through the WRUR programme, the state government had resolved about 75 per cent of the 4,800 complaints received involving various needs and issues faced by the community.

He said the achievement was among the results of efforts undertaken well before the election.

“We have done the work early so that the people are not sweet-talked during the 14-day campaign period. This is important because we must regard our position as elected representatives... as an opportunity to serve the people, not for the people to serve us,” he said.

Ab Rauf said among the elements frequently assessed by fence-sitters was the ability of each candidate elected as a people’s representative to understand the pulse of the community, including listening to and identifying their problems and needs.

“First, a people’s representative must be one of the people before becoming their representative. They must know the people’s problems, know their needs, listen to what they say and convey it to me so that I can formulate policies that the government can implement in the future,” he said.

Ab Rauf said BN left it to the people to assess all the efforts undertaken by the state government before deciding on their mandate on polling day.

“I hope what we have done and what we have delivered will be the best measure for them to continue working together with us in managing Melaka,” he said.

The Election Commission has set November 14 as polling day for the Melaka polls, while early voting will be held on November 10.

马六甲国阵主席拿督斯里阿布·拉乌夫·尤索夫博士表示，这些选民将根据该党治理州的能力以及直接惠及人民的政策和举措的有效性来评价该党。

“持观望态度的人会关注即将获得执政权来管理一个州或国家的政党的走向。

“所以，在做出选择之前，他们会看看我们在治理国家期间为人民带来了什么，”他今天在直落马士州选区竞选办公室视察国阵选举机器的准备工作后告诉记者。

兼任首席部长的阿布劳夫表示，州政府为赢得该团体的支持而采取的措施包括“人民力量”（WRUR）、“Hari Exco Bertemu Rakyat”和“Jelajah Ketua Menteri Sayang Rakyat”计划，这些计划的重点是确定和解决人民面临的各种问题。

他表示，这些举措的实施表明州政府致力于确保每一项计划和政策都能转化为造福社区的行动。

阿布·拉乌夫表示，摇摆不定的选民经常评估的因素之一是，每位当选为人民代表的候选人是否能够了解社区的脉搏，包括倾听和识别他们的问题和需求。

“首先，人民代表必须先成为人民的一员，才能成为人民代表。他们必须了解人民的问题，了解人民的需求，倾听人民的心声，并将这些意见传达给我，这样我才能制定政府将来能够实施的政策，”他说。

阿布·拉乌夫表示，国阵将评估州政府所有努力的权力留给了人民，让他们在投票日决定是否给予支持。

他说：“我希望我们所做的一切以及我们所取得的成果，能够成为他们继续与我们合作管理马六甲的最佳衡量标准。”

选举委员会已将11月14日定为马六甲州选举的正式投票日，提前投票将于11月10日举行。
