Yellow Shirt Leader launches his campaign against ‘injustice’

Former yellow-shirt leader Sondhi Limthongkul, alongside Nitithorn Lamlua and Pichit Chaimongkol, officially launched the “Take Back Our Thailand” campaign to oppose corruption and the rise of illicit foreign business networks under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s administration.

During his speech Sondhi, who was behind the fall of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra with his unabated street protests from 2006-2008, said that he was not undertaking the move to bring down the government of Anutin Charnvirakul but will make his ‘life not easy to live’.

Citing government misconduct regarding flood relief, civil service exam fraud, the Khao Kradong land dispute, data center projects, and alleged Senate election collusion involving major political figures.

Sondhi highlights how top politicians and business tycoons remained the same powerful elite across different administrations, including the Thaksin Shinawatra era. The Bhumjai Thai Party cleverly rebranded itself as a fierce defender of the monarchy to secure votes and gain power, despite its deep-rooted connections to the old political establishment.

Election Commission of Thailand (EC) warned of not doing their duty

Sondhi warned that a failure by the EC to prosecute high-level perpetrators by September 14 will trigger major street protests.

The movement will begin on September 10 with a rally outside the Israeli Embassy to demand crackdowns on foreign grey capital.

He addressed the Prime Minister, saying that if he was confident in the truth, should come out and live stream to clarify the facts.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul declined to give a substantive response regarding Sondhi Limthongkul’s threat to escalate protests if the Election Commission limits or drops prosecutions in the Senate election collusion case.

He gave minimal replies—nodding and stating “I see” when asked about Sondhi’s planned escalation for his “take back Thailand” campaign, and saying ‘Okay’ without confirming or denying whether he would accept Sondhi’s social media debate challenge.

Prime Minister Anutin commended the NDC Class 68 proposals, assuring that the government will instruct relevant agencies to study them thoroughly for implementation in bureaucratic reform and national development.

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the controversial “Senate Collusion” allegations during an interview on Thai PBS’s “ตอบโจทย์” program last night. Anutin firmly denied any involvement by the government or the Bhumjai Thai Party, asserting they had no motive to control the Senate and welcomed transparent, independent investigations to prove their innocence.

Responding to accusations made by political commentator Sondhi Limthongkul, Anutin questioned the existence of concrete evidence behind the claims. He stated that if he were corrupt, he could not have remained in government for eight years, dismissing Sondhi’s statements as unsubstantiated assertions that anyone could make without proof.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana rejected claims by activist Sondhi Limthongkul that new foreign business regulations surrender Thailand’s economic sovereignty, clarifying that the changes merely eliminate duplicate licensing while maintaining strict state oversight.

Denying allegations that local HR and IT sectors would collapse, Lalida emphasized that foreign firms must still comply with sector-specific laws, anti-nominee regulations, and tax codes, noting that software development was explicitly removed from the final policy to safeguard domestic SMEs.

Jatuporn Prompan, a former Red Shirt leader who turned his back on the Red Shirt movement, stated that in the current situation, holding demonstrations similar to the past “color-coded” protests would not be easy.

He noted that taking to the streets to submit a petition to the Israeli embassy or to protest in front of the Government House are normal procedures for public expression. The government should use this opportunity to crack down on shady activities that are a national problem.

If the government fails to do so, this public outcry could escalate. He added that the information disseminated by the committee would be beneficial, and that failure to address the issue would allow it to spread.

Israeli Ambassador Alona Fisher-Kamm will meet with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow today, ahead of a joint press conference and a planned protest outside the Israeli Embassy on September 10.

TAT sets 2026 tourism revenue target at 2.7 trillion Baht with goal of 33 million foreign visitors

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has announced a tourism revenue target of 2.7 trillion Baht for 2026, representing a growth of no less than 7% compared to 2025. Thapanee Kiatphaiboon, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, confirmed that the upcoming year’s revenue is projected to build upon current figures that already exceed baseline expectations.

The projected 2.7 trillion Baht revenue for 2026 is divided into 1.6 trillion Baht from the international market and 1.1 trillion Baht from the domestic market. Looking further ahead to 2027, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports has established a challenging target of 3 trillion Baht to accelerate economic recovery, supported by strengths in the health and wellness sector.

The organization expects foreign visitor arrivals to reach approximately 32.6 to 32.7 million, while maintaining its active push toward the goal of 33 million foreign tourists, these figures do fall slightly below initial forecasts at the start of 2026.

Governor Thapanee expressed confidence in the recovery trajectory, noting that worst-case scenarios involving prolonged conflicts would have placed foreign visitor numbers between 28 and 31 million. With the anticipated growth and the strategic utilization of Thailand’s health and wellness strengths, the Tourism Authority of Thailand remains confident in achieving its ambitious long-term targets.

Starting with the September 2026 billing cycle, the energy charge will drop from 6.8024 Baht per unit to match regular residential rates, capping the cost for the first 200 units at no more than 3 Baht per unit.

Dr. Poonpat Leesombatpaiboon, Secretary-General of the Office of the ERC and spokesperson for the commission, stated that the previous rate was deemed unfair, especially for low-income earners who had to pay higher electricity costs than general households.

These state market-stabilization interventions come as the national Oil Fuel Fund’s balance sheet posted its latest deficit at 83.29 billion Baht.

The government is encouraging citizens who are eligible for the “Thai Chuay Thai Plus” project to use their benefits during the final month of the program in order to reduce their daily expenses and distribute income to small retailers nationwide. Resistance levels are seen at 1,625-1,630 points, and support levels at 1,595-1,600 points.

Sarath Ratanavadi CEO of Gulf Development Public Company Limited (GULF) clarified at an analyst meeting that media reports claiming the Cabinet approved legal action against GULF and Thaicom for roughly 1.26 billion Baht in penalties are misleading. GULF was never involved in operating the Thaicom 4 and 6 satellites, noting its exposure is merely a contingent liability inherited from its amalgamation with INTUCH.

He added that Thaicom has already returned all required concession equipment to the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society—backed by an official confirmation letter—and that any remaining dispute over 300 million Baht in asset value involves minor leftover equipment that can be returned without issue.

Sarath disputed the reported 1.2 billion Baht claim, explaining that only about 300 million Baht involves items acknowledged for potential return or compensation, while the remaining 800–900 million Baht consists of interest and opportunity-cost charges that GULF rejects. He clarified that the dispute will be handled through arbitration rather than a court lawsuit, noting that Cabinet approval was merely a procedural necessity required to submit the case for arbitration before the five-year statute of limitations expired.

2026/2027 Budget Debate

The case centers on allegations that government agencies and state officials neglected their duties or acted with unreasonable delay concerning the blackchin tilapia infestation.

The legal action, registered under black case number ส.14/2567, is set to be delivered on September 8 at 10:00 AM in courtroom 6 on the third floor of the Central Administrative Court building on Chaeng Watthana Road in Bangkok.

The plaintiffs claim that the Department of Fisheries and the other 18 defendants failed to properly control importers who brought the blackchin tilapia into the country. This alleged oversight led to the widespread invasion of the species across multiple provinces in Thailand.

Additionally, the lawsuit accuses the authorities of neglecting to enforce legal measures to investigate and take legal action against the importers. The plaintiffs argue that these regulatory failures have caused significant distress and damage to both the individual complainants and the general public.

The Supreme Court on Monday upheld the death sentences for five individuals convicted of trafficking 5.2 million methamphetamine pills and laundering the proceeds through a Myanmar-based vehicle business. Following their 2019 arrest, which resulted in the seizure of roughly 100 million Baht in luxury assets, lower courts issued capital punishment rulings that all five defendants appealed.

Rejecting their denials, the Supreme Court ruled that the group operated a major cross-border drug network that posed a severe threat to public health, the economy, and national security.

Two Pathumwan Institute of Technology students, aged 19 and 21, were stabbed in the back on Monday morning during a brawl with approximately 30 Uthenthawai students on the third floor of BTS Siam station. Despite seven police officers attempting to intervene, the confrontation broke out and is suspected to be linked to a skywalk fight from the previous week.
