An elderly man was fined $5,000 on Wednesday (Nov 4) and handed a driving ban of five years after an accident with a motorcyclist in Upper Thomson in 2025.

Goh Boon Kang, who will turn 95 in mid-November, was sentenced after admitting to driving without reasonable consideration causing grievous hurt.

The accident occurred along Upper Thomson Road, near the junction of Jalan Angklong, at about 9.45am on Sept 2, 2025.

Goh had failed to give way to a motorcyclist travelling from his left, who had the right of way.

The victim, 58, was flung off his bike and suffered multiple leg fractures, reported The Straits Times.

He stayed in hospital for 32 days before being transferred to a Malaysian hospital.

The offence of driving without due care or reasonable consideration causing grievous hurt carries a fine of up to $5,000, up to two years' jail, or both. Offenders also face driving disqualification.

Drivers aged 65 and above must undergo a medical examination to be certified fit to drive by a Singapore-registered medical practitioner.

The medical examination must be repeated every three years.

Elderly drivers without the certification will have to surrender their driving licence.
