Gov't to spend extra $67.2 mil. on food discounts ahead of Chuseok

Korea will allocate an additional 90 billion won to stabilize prices of major food items ahead of the extended Chuseok holiday, on top of 103 billion won previously announced. The finance ministry said the discount campaign will run until the end of the month, with Chuseok set for Sept. 24-27. The government will also release another 2,000 tons of popular fishery products and offer discounts of up to 64 percent on 4,765 products. It estimated the average cost of preparing a Chuseok ancestral rite table for a family of four at 331,089 won, down 2.3 percent from a year earlier.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy said the additional budget amounts to 90 billion won, or $67.2 million.

The discount campaign, originally scheduled to end on Sept. 23, will continue through the end of the month.

The government will work with 20 processed food manufacturers to discount up to 4,765 products by as much as 64 percent.

Korea will allocate an additional 90 billion won ($67.2 million) to stabilize prices of major food items ahead of this month's extended Chuseok holiday, on top of the 103 billion won previously announced, the finance ministry said Wednesday.

The Ministry of Finance and Economy unveiled the plan as the country prepares to celebrate Chuseok, the Korean equivalent of Thanksgiving, from Sept. 24-27. The holiday is marked by visits to hometowns, family reunions, ancestral rites, and preparation and consumption of specially prepared food.

The discount campaign, originally scheduled to run through Sept. 23, will continue until the end of the month.

The government will release another 2,000 tons of popular fishery products this month, supplementing an earlier batch of 20,000 tons.

It will work with 20 processed food manufacturers to offer discounts of up to 64 percent on 4,765 products, the finance ministry added.

The ministry, meanwhile, said the average cost of preparing a Chuseok ancestral rite table for a family of four was estimated at 331,089 won ($247), down 2.3 percent from a year earlier.

韩国财政部周三表示，除了此前宣布的1030亿韩元外，韩国还将额外拨款900亿韩元（约合6720万美元）用于稳定本月延长的中秋节假期前主要食品的价格。

韩国财政经济部公布了这项计划，此时正值韩国准备庆祝中秋节之际（9月24日至27日）。中秋节是韩国的感恩节，人们会在这一节日期间回乡探亲、与家人团聚、祭祀祖先，并准备和享用特制的食物。

原定于9月23日结束的折扣活动将持续到月底。

本月政府将再投放2000吨受欢迎的水产品，此前已投放2万吨。
