‘No need to erase history’: Wanita Umno defends Najib’s legacy amid ‘legal process’

The women's wing of Umno has reiterated its loyalty to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging past leaders' contributions to the party and the nation, despite his ongoing legal challenges.

Speaking at the Wanita Umno general assembly, chief Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad stressed that the party need not "erase history" to build its future and highlighted Najib's significant impact on Malaysia's economic and infrastructure development.

While recognizing the judiciary process, she called for compassion and offered prayers for Najib and his family during their current trials, expressing hope for a just resolution.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — The women’s wing of Umno has reaffirmed its loyalty to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, asserting that the party does not need to “erase history” to build its future.

Speaking at the Wanita Umno general assembly today, the wing’s chief, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad, urged the party to appreciate leaders who devoted their lives to the service of Umno and the nation.

“We appreciate those who have contributed to the party. We appreciate the leaders of the past who devoted a large part of their lives to Umno and the country.

“And Wanita Umno also does not forget the contributions of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. We do not need to erase history to build the future,” Noraini said in her policy speech.

Noraini, who also serves as the Minister of plantation and commodities, argued that Najib’s impact on the country’s economic transformation, infrastructure development, and public assistance remains an undeniable part of Malaysia’s history, regardless of the current political climate.

While acknowledging the ongoing legal proceedings involving the former prime minister, she maintained that respect for the judiciary does not preclude the expression of human compassion.

“But respecting the legal process does not prevent us from having human values. Wanita Umno knows how to remember the contributions of others,” she said.

Concluding her address, Noraini offered prayers for Najib and his family, expressing hope that they would find the strength and resilience to endure their current trials.

“We continue to pray that the doors of justice and compassion will be opened, so that he can return to his family and continue the struggle together,” she said.

Najib is currently serving a prison sentence from one of his convictions over the 1MDB global corruption scandal.

诺莱妮同时也是种植园和商品部长，她认为，无论当前的政治气候如何，纳吉对国家经济转型、基础设施发展和公共援助的影响仍然是马来西亚历史上不可否认的一部分。

她承认涉及这位前总理的法律诉讼仍在进行中，但她坚持认为，尊重司法机关并不妨碍表达人类的同情心。

“但是尊重法律程序并不妨碍我们秉持人文价值观。巫统妇女组懂得铭记他人的贡献，”她说道。

诺莱妮在讲话结束时，为纳吉布及其家人祈祷，希望他们能够找到力量和韧性来忍受当前的考验。

“我们继续祈祷正义和仁慈之门能够敞开，让他能够回到家人身边，继续并肩奋斗，”她说。

纳吉布目前因参与1MDB全球腐败丑闻而被判入狱服刑。
