PAS at Umno assembly: Friendly visit or ‘preview’ of next election?

The presence of PAS delegates at Umno's annual assembly in Kuala Lumpur signals a burgeoning interest in Malay-Muslim unity, reflecting recent cooperative successes in Johor and Negeri Sembilan.

Umno representatives consider this engagement a reciprocal gesture following their attendance at PAS's Muktamar, with discussions around potential electoral collaboration for the upcoming Melaka elections intensifying.

While no formal alliance has been declared, the exchange of delegations between the two parties underscores their shared commitment to "penyatuan ummah," indicating potential strategic alignment in future elections.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10 — When PAS delegates began arriving at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur last night for Umno’s annual assembly this week, the gesture drew more than polite greetings from party members.

For some Umno delegates, the presence of PAS delegates was a sign that the idea of Malay-Muslim unity was gaining ground again.

For others, it was a matter of returning a courtesy after Umno representatives attended PAS’s muktamar last week.

But even those who played down the symbolism acknowledged that the appearance of PAS figures at Umno’s biggest annual gathering carried a different weight this time, coming after Umno and PAS-backed cooperation in Johor and Negri Sembilan and as Melaka emerges as the next electoral test.

Muhamad Ainnul Haziq Mohd Razlan, 28, Kepong Umno division member, said he believed Umno should continue pursuing “ penyatuan ummah ”, or Malay-Muslim political unity, rather than treating it as a temporary political slogan.

“I think we should continue with this unity, and I hope the leaders, the top leadership, will make the best use of this unity. We at the youth level see this unity as something very good,” he told Malay Mail on the sidelines of the assembly.

For Ainnul, PAS’s decision to send representatives to the Umno assembly was also a positive signal after Umno was invited to attend PAS’s muktamar last week.

“When PAS invited us to its muktamar last week, that was very good. When someone shows us kindness, we return it,” he said.

He said Umno Youth had also invited PAS Youth representatives to its programmes, describing the exchanges as a positive signal for possible cooperation in the 16th general election.

“Officially, we have to leave that to the top leadership and wait for their answer,” he said.

During the youth assembly on this morning, party youth chief Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh welcomed his compatriot from PAS, Afnan Hamimi Taib, describing the latter’s attendance as the culmination of three years of discussions between the two youth wings on national issues.

The distinction, between what members can read into the gestures and what the leadership is prepared to formally commit to, runs through conversations at this year’s assembly.

Hirzan Alam, 29, information chief of the Kota Kemuning Umno Youth division, took a more restrained view, saying PAS’s presence was mainly about returning the favour after Umno representatives attended its muktamar .

For Muhammad Najeeh Norazam, 33, a committee member of Umno Youth’s Damansara division, however, the visit could be read as something more.

“To be frank, if you ask me whether PAS coming to any party is more or less a formality to celebrate the relationship, like how we used to invite Harapan to come to WTC to establish unity and whatnot, it is basically more or less a symbolic indicator that we are working together,” he said.

Najeeh pointed to Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s position that the two parties currently have only a “mutual understanding”, rather than a formal agreement.

“But I think, for a fact, it is a symbol. We might see a shadow of what is going to be the next election’s coalition, like a preview, more or less,” he said.

Another Umno member at the assembly offered a similar reading, saying PAS’s attendance did not itself carry a formal political message as long as no such position had been announced by the top leadership.

But he said the exchange of delegations nevertheless showed that both parties were serious about the broader agenda of Malay-Muslim unity.

“Umno sent representatives to the muktamar , PAS sent representatives to PAU. That shows how serious both parties are about uniting the ummah ,” he said.

Junaidi Ifdam Jun, 32, from Umno’s Batu Sapi division in Sabah, was more direct in his interpretation.

“For me, it means we will be together. That is what I feel,” he said.

The speculation is taking place against a backdrop that has changed considerably for Umno in recent months.

The party entered this year’s assembly buoyed by victories in Johor and Negri Sembilan.

BN won 48 of Johor’s 56 state seats, including 36 for Umno, while in Negeri Sembilan it secured 18 of 36 seats, with Umno winning all 16 seats it contested. Perikatan Nasional, led by PAS, secured seven.

The two coalitions subsequently agreed to work together to form the state administration.

Those results have given Umno delegates a renewed sense of confidence, while also raising the question of how far that momentum can be carried into the next contest.

Melaka is now the obvious test.

The state assembly’s term ends in December, and discussions over possible cooperation for the election are already underway.

Zahid has said negotiations would take place after the assembly is dissolved, while Dr Akmal has been more openly supportive of working with PAS in the state.

Dr Akmal has described Melaka as a test of whether “ penyatuan ummah ” can move beyond rhetoric and become an electoral strategy, pointing to the recent results in Johor and Negeri Sembilan as evidence of what cooperation can achieve.

That makes the PAS delegation’s appearance at the Umno assembly difficult to separate from the electoral calculations ahead, even if no formal pact has been announced.

For delegates like Ainnul, the immediate message is more about keeping the door open.

The exchanges between Umno and PAS have become more visible at a time when both parties are assessing what their next electoral moves could look like.
