Fire breaks out at Pulau Burung landfill in Penang, 40pc still burning in one sector (VIDEO)

A fire broke out at the Pulau Burung Solid Waste Landfill Site in Nibong Tebal on the night of September 11, with no casualties reported.

Fire engines from various local fire stations, including the Nibong Tebal and Sungai Bakap stations, responded promptly to control the blaze, which affected an area of 1,003 square meters.

By 12:30 am, the fire was under control, but overhaul operations continued to ensure complete extinguishment.

The firefighting efforts involved collaboration among multiple fire brigades, with significant portions of the fire still active in designated sectors as of the following morning.

NIBONG TEBAL, Sept 11 — A pile of rubbish at the Pulau Burung Solid Waste Landfill Site here caught fire last night. No casualties were reported.

Penang Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director John Sagun Francis said fire engines from the Nibong Tebal Fire and Rescue Station (known by its Malay initials as BBP) were rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 11.36 pm.

“Upon arrival, the fire brigade’s Operational Response Team found that a rubbish fire had broken out at the landfill. Firefighting and containment operations were immediately carried out, including the creation of a firebreak to prevent the fire from spreading.

“The fire, which involved an area measuring 120 by 90 feet, or 1,003 square metres, was brought under control at 12.30 am. However, as of 7.30 am today, overhaul operations were still being carried out to ensure that the fire was completely extinguished,” he said in a statement today.

He said the firefighting operation was divided into two sectors: Sector A, handled by the Sungai Bakap BBP, and Sector B, handled by the Nibong Tebal BBP. As of this morning, approximately 40 per cent of the fire in Sector A has yet to be extinguished, while 50 per cent remains in Sector B.

John Sagun said the Bandar Perda BBP and the Valdor, Permatang Tinggi and Nibong Tebal Volunteer Fire Brigades also joined in the firefighting operation. — Bernama
