KOSPI falls on higher oil prices, global bond yields

The KOSPI fell Friday in Seoul as rising oil prices and higher global bond yields fueled inflation worries. It closed at 6,909.91, down 1.76 percent, after opening 3.29 percent lower. Foreign investors sold a net 2.29 trillion won and the won weakened to 1,345.9 per dollar.

Foreign investors sold a net 2.29 trillion won worth of shares, while institutional investors sold a net 1.22 trillion won.

Retail investors were net buyers, purchasing 1.87 trillion won worth of shares.

SK hynix fell 2.21 percent to 1.812 million won, and Samsung Electronics lost 3.35 percent to 259,500 won.

The Kosdaq closed at 820.64, down 1.95 percent, and the won-dollar exchange rate ended at 1,345.9 won per dollar.

The KOSPI edged lower Friday amid rising oil prices as renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East fueled concerns over inflation.

The benchmark index opened 3.29 percent lower at 6,802.50 and pared some of its losses in afternoon trading before closing at 6,909.91, down 1.76 percent from the previous session.

Foreign investors sold a net 2.29 trillion won ($1.70 billion) worth of shares, while institutional investors sold a net 1.22 trillion won. Retail investors were the net buyers, purchasing 1.87 trillion won worth of shares.

Market bellwethers also fell. SK hynix fell 2.21 percent to close at 1.812 million won, while Samsung Electronics lost 3.35 percent to finish at 259,500 won.

With little prospect of negotiations between Iran and the United States resuming in the near term, international oil prices continued to rise. West Texas Intermediate and Brent crude futures climbed above $100 per barrel, adding to concerns over inflation.

Concerns over inflation were also heightened after the U.S. producer price index rose 5.4 percent in August from a year earlier, Thursday (local time), slightly above market expectations of 5.3 percent.

U.S. Treasury yields rose as investors remained concerned about inflation and U.S. fiscal policy. The 10-year Treasury yield rose 12 basis points to 4.96 percent, nearing the psychologically important 5 percent level, putting further pressure on stocks.

"The local stock market remained weak as international oil prices and U.S. Treasury yields surged. Investor caution also grew ahead of the release of the U.S. consumer price index, weakening demand for riskier assets," said Lee Kyoung-min, a researcher at Daishin Securities.

Investors are now turning their attention to the U.S. consumer price index for August, due Friday (local time), as the data could provide further clues about the Federal Reserve's monetary policy.

The secondary bourse Kosdaq, meanwhile, fell 1.95 percent to close at 820.64, down 16.28 points from the previous session.

The won-dollar exchange rate closed at 1,345.9 won per dollar, up 6.7 won from the previous session.

由于伊朗和美国近期重启谈判的可能性微乎其微，国际油价持续上涨。西德克萨斯中质原油和布伦特原油期货价格均突破每桶100美元，加剧了人们对通胀的担忧。

周四（当地时间），美国8月份生产者价格指数同比上涨5.4%，略高于市场预期的5.3%，这加剧了人们对通胀的担忧。

由于投资者持续担忧通胀和美国财政政策，美国国债收益率上升。10年期美国国债收益率上涨12个基点至4.96%，逼近具有重要心理意义的5%关口，进一步打压股市。

“由于国际油价和美国国债收益率飙升，本地股市依然疲软。此外，在美国消费者价格指数公布前，投资者谨慎情绪加剧，削弱了对风险较高资产的需求，”大信证券研究员李京敏表示。

投资者现在将注意力转向将于周五（当地时间）公布的美国8月份消费者价格指数，因为该数据可能提供有关美联储货币政策的更多线索。

与此同时，韩国二级市场 Kosdaq 下跌 1.95%，收于 820.64 点，较前一交易日下跌 16.28 点。

韩元兑美元汇率收于1美元兑1345.9韩元，较前一交易日上涨6.7韩元。
