AI's boom is draining global water supplies – what should users know?

THERE is a version of Malaysia's AI story that reads like a triumph. Under the AI Nation 2030 agenda, hundreds of thousands of civil servants have been trained on generative tools. Ministries are rolling out chatbots, drafting assistants and AI-powered dashboards at a pace unthinkable five years ago. The National AI Office speaks of leapfrogging. The optics are undeniably good.

But optics are not capability, and adoption is not the same as understanding. Beneath the headline numbers sits a harder question that almost nobody in the current conversation is asking: Does the civil service actually own what it is racing to adopt and does it understand what it is putting at risk in the process?
