Fire breaks out in Bukit Panjang open grass patch, no injuries reported

The blaze involved vegetation measuring about 30m by 20m.

SINGAPORE – A fire covering an area measuring nearly a third of a football field broke out in an open grass patch in Bukit Panjang on Sept 3.

The blaze, which occurred at about 4.30pm near the junction of Bukit Panjang Ring Road and Fajar Road, involved vegetation measuring about 30m by 20m, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in response to queries from The Straits Times.

No injuries were reported, and the fire was extinguished with a water jet.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

In a video posted on Facebook group Complaint Singapore, thick white smoke can be seen billowing from the field, as multiple SCDF personnel worked to douse the flames.

SCDF and police vehicles were also at the scene.

The video also shows a burning cage, typically used to safely contain burning joss paper during the Hungry Ghost Festival, on the field.

When The Straits Times visited the scene on the evening of Sept 3, glowing embers were still visible on burnt joss paper inside the metal cage.

During the festival, Taoists and Buddhists observe the customary practice of offering food and burning joss paper to honour their ancestors.

The 2026 festival runs from Aug 13 to Sept 10.

In an advisory on Aug 12, the National Environment Agency (NEA) urged those making such offerings to keep shared spaces clean while paying their respects.

“Do not toss or scatter joss paper, and clear your offerings after prayers. Leaving items behind may constitute littering,” the NEA said.

新加坡——9月3日，武吉班让的一片空地上发生火灾，过火面积几乎相当于一个足球场的三分之一。

新加坡民防部队（SCDF）在回复《海峡时报》的询问时表示，这场火灾发生在下午 4 点 30 分左右，地点位于武吉班让环路和法嘉路的交界处附近，过火植被面积约为 30 米乘 20 米。

据报道，无人受伤，火势被水枪扑灭。

火灾原因正在调查中。

在 Facebook 群组“Complaint Singapore”发布的一段视频中，可以看到浓浓的白烟从田野中滚滚升起，多名新加坡民防部队人员正在努力扑灭火焰。

新加坡民防部队和警车也抵达现场。

视频中还显示，田野里有一个燃烧的笼子，这种笼子通常用于在盂兰盆节期间安全地盛放燃烧的纸钱。

9月3日晚，《海峡时报》记者来到现场时，金属笼内烧焦的纸钱上仍然可以看到闪烁的余烬。

节日期间，道教徒和佛教徒会按照习俗供奉食物、焚烧纸钱，以祭祀祖先。

2026 年电影节将于 8 月 13 日至 9 月 10 日举行。

8月12日，国家环境局（NEA）发布公告，敦促举行祭祀活动的人们在表达敬意的同时，保持公共场所的清洁。

“请勿随意抛撒纸钱，祈祷结束后请清理供品。遗留物品可能构成乱扔垃圾。”国家环境局表示。
