Houthi projectile wounds two, damages mosque in Jazan region, Saudi says

Saudi Civil Defence has said that two people were wounded and a mosque and several buildings were damaged after a projectile fired by the Yemeni Houthi rebels struck Saudi Arabia’s southern Jazan region.

Several vehicles were also damaged by the projectile that landed in Jazan’s al-Tuwal governorate on Saturday, it added.

A Civil Defence spokesperson called the targeting of civilian objects a “flagrant violation of international humanitarian law”, adding that established emergency procedures had been implemented.

The Iran-aligned Houthis, who have been fighting Yemen’s Saudi-backed internationally recognised government, said they carried out a strike targeting a Saudi military base in Sharurah, in the southern Najran province, using ballistic missiles and drones. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a post on X that the attack hit “weapons depots and command and control centres” and that the targeted sites were “managing the aggression against our nation and people”.

Saree, who did not state when the attack took place, warned Saudi Arabia that further military actions would prompt larger, more intense strikes deeper inside Saudi territory.

Saudi Civil Defence later said the danger had passed in the Khamis Mushait governorate after a warning was issued for residents there.

The Houthis have launched missile and drone strikes on southern Saudi Arabia in recent days.

On Tuesday, the group struck civilian and economic facilities in Saudi cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, wounding 73 people, including women and children.

The strikes on the kingdom are part of a rapid escalation in Yemen’s long-running conflict, which reignited in July after roughly four years of relative calm under a United Nations-brokered truce.

Houthi fighters have taken control of Yemen’s entire Red Sea coast, seizing the strategic port city of Mocha, while Yemeni government forces have opened new fronts in al-Jawf, Marib and al-Bayda.

More than 500 people have been killed and tens of thousands displaced in the fighting, according to the International Organization for Migration and local officials.

The UN Security Council held an emergency session on the crisis this month, as Special Envoy Hans Grundberg warned Yemen faces “a new and more dangerous phase of war”.

萨里没有说明袭击发生的时间，但他警告沙特阿拉伯，进一步的军事行动将导致沙特境内更大规模、更猛烈的袭击。

沙特民防部门随后表示，在向哈米斯穆沙伊特省居民发出警告后，该省的危险已经解除。

近日，胡塞武装对沙特阿拉伯南部发动了导弹和无人机袭击。

周二，该组织袭击了沙特阿拉伯艾卜哈、哈米斯穆沙伊特、吉赞和纳季兰等城市的民用和经济设施，造成 73 人受伤，其中包括妇女和儿童。

对沙特王国的袭击是也门长期冲突迅速升级的一部分。这场冲突在联合国斡旋的停火协议下经历了大约四年的相对平静后，于7月再次爆发。

本月，联合国安理会就也门危机举行了紧急会议，特使汉斯·格伦伯格警告说，也门正面临“战争进入一个全新且更加危险的阶段”。
