Parliament Open Day draws record 13,368 visitors

The Parliament Open Day event in Kuala Lumpur, held over two days, successfully attracted 13,368 visitors, surpassing the initial target of 10,000.

Senate President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah highlighted this achievement as the best since its inception in 2023, reflecting public interest in understanding parliamentary processes.

The initiative aimed to bridge the gap between Parliament and the public by granting firsthand access to its operations, previously off-limits, to enhance civic understanding.

The event was praised for fostering public awareness and preparing future generations to engage with legislative processes.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 13 — The two-day Parliament Open Day which began yesterday successfully attracted over 13,368 visitors, exceeding the initial target of 10,000 people.

Senate President Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah said the figure represents the programme's best achievement since it was first organised in 2023, while demonstrating the public's desire to gain a deeper understanding of the institution that serves as a symbol of the country's democracy.

“We have many programmes for the people so that the public can get to know Parliament better. This is their house, the house of the people's representatives,” he said at the closing ceremony of the programme here, today.

He also expressed his appreciation and congratulated the Parliament Chief Administrator Datuk Dr Ahmad Husaini Abdul Rahman, parliamentary staff, and government ministries and agencies involved in making the programme a success.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Husaini said the goal of the programme is to bring Parliament closer to the people by giving the public the opportunity to see firsthand the atmosphere and processes that take place inside, given that the area is off-limits on normal days.

“A total of 13,368 visitors were recorded throughout the two days of the programme, compared to about 8,600 visitors in 2023. This increase in attendance shows that public awareness and interest in the institution of Parliament are growing,” he said.

A visitor, Ahmad Firdaus Abdullah Tahrin, 43, said he took the opportunity to bring his children and friends to visit Parliament to provide direct exposure to the institution.

Working as a teacher, he said the visit is important so that children can gain knowledge about Parliament not only through textbooks, but also see the conference venue themselves and understand what happens inside the House.

“When we bring them here ourselves, they can see the actual atmosphere and better understand what they learn in textbooks,” he said.

He added that this direct exposure can help children understand how laws, policies, and acts are debated and implemented, besides preparing them to be future leaders. — Bernama

“在为期两天的活动中，共记录到13368名参观者，而2023年同期参观人数约为8600人。参观人数的增加表明，公众对议会机构的认识和兴趣正在不断提高，”他说。

一位名叫艾哈迈德·菲尔道斯·阿卜杜拉·塔赫林（43岁）的参观者表示，他借此机会带他的孩子和朋友参观国会，让他们直接接触这个机构。

作为一名教师，他表示这次参观非常重要，孩子们不仅可以从教科书中了解议会，还可以亲眼看到会议场所，了解议会内部发生的事情。

他说：“当我们亲自带他们来这里时，他们可以亲眼看到真实的氛围，更好地理解他们在课本上学到的知识。”

他补充说，这种直接接触可以帮助孩子们了解法律、政策和法令是如何被讨论和实施的，同时也能为他们成为未来的领导者做好准备。——马新社
