D-day for 229 implicated for the ‘Senate Collusion’ case

Today the Election Commission (EC) is set to start its meeting at 10:00 hrs. and a verdict is expected to be announced by around 16:30 hrs.

Media outlets have already started to speculate the outcome with all the 138 Senators implicated being pushed to be taken to court for deliberation, while the 139 th until the 229 th which would include the executive members of Bhumjai Thai party including Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, would be let go scot-free.

The 7 members of the Election Commission of Thailand (EC) are under pressure to make a call and to make matters worse, 4 out of the 7 members are people appointed by the current group of Senators who are being investigated (a conflict of interest).

Pressure Building ahead of the Verdict

Civil society group iLaw led an 11-kilometre march in Bangkok on Sunday, demanding that the Election Commission refer the case against all 229 people accused of collusion in the 2024 Senate selection to the Supreme Court. The march began at iLaw’s office in Lat Phrao Soi 25 and headed to the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre.

Participants included People’s Party leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, party-list MP Parit Wacharasindhu , several key party figures and former election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn.

iLaw executive director Yingcheep Atchanont questioned the EC’s independence, saying four of its seven commissioners had been selected with the involvement of the current Senate. He warned that iLaw would disclose its evidence against anyone whose case was dismissed.

Yesterday iLaw has also disclosed the 140 names identified as “pre-selected” in the ‘cheat sheets’ linked to the Senate election fraud case. This information emerged from the investigation conducted by the 26 th Inquiry Committee, which examined witness testimonies and various forms of evidence—such as the preparation of the cheat sheets, money transfers for compensation, and phone records.

A key piece of evidence discovered was the “cheat sheet” itself; when the numbers listed on it were cross-referenced with the candidate list, 140 individuals were identified—comprising 137 elected Senators and three other candidates.

A coalition of four civil society networks and prominent public figures—including former 2007 Constitution Drafting Assembly members, former National Reform Council members, senior academics, and the Mahidol Alumni Network—has issued a joint statement calling on the Election Commission (EC) to submit vote-rigging cases involving the Senate selection to the Supreme Court.

The group cited ongoing evidence of systemic corruption, collusion, and block voting across all levels, warning that these practices severely undermine the country’s rule of law. Signed by 73 influential figures, including former Parliament President Arthit Ourairat, former NACC member Vicha Mahakun, and former Senator Jermsak Pinthong, the statement delivers a firm demand for the EC to take decisive legal action.

Prime Minister Anutin heads to Vietnam with HM the King

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, who is today set to accompany HM the King during his state visit to Vietnam, said that he has nothing to prepare ahead of the Election Commission’s (EC) ruling on alleged 2024 Senate election collusion, despite being among the 229 accused.

He emphasized that MPs and the public may discuss the allegations without interfering with investigators. Confident in his government’s stability—highlighting smooth coalition cooperation during his first year as Prime Minister and the approval of the fiscal 2027 budget—he dismissed political risks, stating he only fears actual explosive landmines that harm soldiers and civilians.

The EC is expected to decide on September 14 whether to refer the case to the Supreme Court, which could lead to a Constitutional Court petition for Bhumjai Thai’s dissolution if party involvement is proven.

Former Deputy Prime Minister and Pheu Thai Party leader Phumtham Wechayachai addressed recent political tension in a Facebook post following his comments on Senate collusion, emphasizing that his goal was responsible politics rather than partisan debating. Responding to criticisms, he warned against using political theatrics to cast blame on Pheu Thai to cover up internal party shortcomings, noting that an apology alone is insufficient.

Phumtham detailed past talks between Pheu Thai leadership—including Chusak Sirinil, Jiraphorn Sinthuprai, and Sruang Thienthong—and “Orange Party” executives.

He stated that Pheu Thai fully extended an invitation to cooperate, but the Orange Party declined due to alleged distrust, leading them to align with the “Blue Party” instead. Urging all political factions to focus on their own responsibilities without inter-party interference, he concluded that the Thai public will ultimately judge the actions of every party.

Former People’s Party MP Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn and former Future Forward Party MP Amarat Chokepamitkul publicly responded to Pheu Thai Party leader Phumtham Wechayachai’s comments regarding political negotiations and the Senate collusion and Khao Kradong cases. Wiroj acknowledged Phumtham’s perspective and accepted full responsibility for the People’s Party’s past decisions without making excuses.

However, he emphasized that political choices do not absolve any party from the responsibility to combat corruption.

Stating that Phumtham’s post proved Pheu Thai was fully aware of the severity of the Senate collusion and Khao Kradong issues, Wiroj urged that these matters be investigated and prosecuted fairly regardless of political affiliations. Concurrently, Amarat offered a sharper critique, dismissing Phumtham’s explanation, condemning Pheu Thai’s alliance with the Democrat Party, and calling on the party to stop making excuses.

The Senate approved the 3.788-trillion-baht fiscal 2027 budget bill on Friday with 145 votes in favor, five opposed, and 12 abstentions out of 162 total votes. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed his gratitude to the senators, highlighting the budget as a vital tool to drive government policies and foster sustainable economic growth.

On September 13, Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior posted a message on Facebook stating that Their Majesties the King and Queen had graciously commanded Air Marshal Phakdee Saeng-chuto, Assistant Principal Private Secretary, to present a royal flower vase on the occasion of his 60th birthday.

Yesterday Anutin hosted a private family merit-making event at his residence for his 60 th birthday, drawing visits and well-wishes from key cabinet members, top interior officials, and senior police officers.

Prominent political figures sent congratulatory flower baskets, including Privy Councillor Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, Khunying Potjaman Damapong, and Deputy Prime Minister Yoschanan Wongsawat.

During the event, Ministry of Interior executives presented the Prime Minister with a commemorative plaque bearing his official directives on public welfare, law enforcement, and drug suppression.

A recent Suan Dusit Poll survey on political rallies reveals that most Thais moderately follow political news 44.65%, with economic strain 69.54% and political cases 68.76% identified as the main drivers behind potential protests. Although 47.95% view rallies as a platform to highlight societal issues and 41.86% believe they could trigger change, 40.56% feel the timing is not yet appropriate.

Poll chairman Dr. Pornpan Buathong noted that despite rising public pressure over economic hardship and distrust in the political system, citizens fear protests could cause further uncertainty rather than provide solutions, emphasizing that leaders must address root causes and foster inclusive dialogue instead.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas announced that Phase 2 of the “Thai Chuey Thai Plus” scheme is under consideration, as sufficient funding remains from the initial 200 billion baht allocated to ease living costs during the energy crisis. The Ministry of Finance plans to evaluate public spending demand and post-Phase 1 economic conditions at the end of September to determine the appropriate extension period, which will likely be 1–2 months.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul previously instructed Minister Ekniti to proceed with the extension after learning that 40 to 50 billion baht remained unclaimed, aiming to help citizens offset rising fuel costs.

Dismissing opposition criticism, the Prime Minister affirmed that he stands with the public and remains unfazed as long as government policies benefit the people and the nation.

Somchai Pornrattanajaroen, honorary advisor to the Thai Wholesale and Retail Association, suggested that the government pause the “Thai Chuey Thai Plus” scheme for 1–2 months after Phase 1 ends in late September, rather than extending it immediately. He proposed launching Phase 2 in December as a New Year’s gift, explaining that a temporary break would allow households to consume stockpiled goods and prevent fiscal strain.

Somchai also expressed concerns over post-scheme purchasing slowdowns and rising consumer product prices, urging the government to focus on cost reduction, local job creation, and promoting household frugality instead of creating long-term reliance on handouts.

Somsak Anuntawat, Director-General of the Revenue Department, reported that cumulative tax collection for the first 11 months of fiscal year 2026 (October 2025 – August 2026) reached 2.16 trillion baht (88.35% of the annual target), representing a 7.2% year-on-year increase. The total revenue was primarily driven by Value Added Tax (VAT) at 990,794 million baht (45.83%), Corporate Income Tax at 646,259 million baht (29.89%), and Personal Income Tax at 424,684 million baht (19.64%).

The department expects total collection for fiscal year 2026 to exceed its 2.45 trillion baht target by about 2% (40,000–50,000 million baht), boosted by import VAT and corporate taxes from energy and consumer sector listed companies. Additionally, the department brought over 170,000 new taxpayers (worth over 7 billion baht) into the system—including 56,000 e-commerce merchants—by leveraging data analytics, while targeting listed companies on the Market for Alternative Investment (mai).

For fiscal year 2027, the Revenue Department has set a tax collection target of 2.5 trillion baht, based on actual revenues while studying OECD international tax standards and a potential Departure Tax.

On September 11, 2026, the Royal Gazette published an announcement from the Energy Policy Administration Committee (EPAC) regarding ex-refinery price reductions for high-speed diesel, signed by Wattanapong Kurovat, Director-General of the Energy Policy and Planning Office. The notice highlights ongoing Middle East tensions among the US, Israel, and Iran, which continue to disrupt global oil supplies and cause high domestic fuel price volatility. To mitigate potential shortages, EPAC resolved to reduce the ex-refinery price of high-speed diesel by 2.40 baht per liter, effective from September 16 to October 31, 2026.

The ex-refinery price reduction of 2.40 baht per liter across three types of high-speed diesel fuel: High-Speed Diesel B0, Regular High-Speed Diesel B7, and High-Speed Diesel B20.

On Friday, September 11, the SET Index closed at 1,604.52 points, down 10.55 points (-0.65%), with a trading value of 71,213.01 million baht. Phuket Real Estate Value Hits 705 billion Baht Driven by Foreign Demand for Villas and Condos

Phuket’s real estate market in 2026 features a total of 90,597 residential and accommodation units under construction or waiting to be sold, valued at 705,055 million baht, which is the highest among regional provinces in Thailand. Resort villas and resort condominiums account for 52 percent of the total units and represent about 80 percent of the total market value, heavily driven by purchasing power from foreign buyers such as Russia, China, Europe, and the Middle East.

The survey covering Thalang, Mueang, and Kathu districts reveals that Thalang is the most heavily developed area with 411 projects, particularly in zones like Cherngtalay, Bang Tao, Layan, and Srisoonthorn. While resort condominiums and villas command high prices, notably with resort villas priced mainly between 20-to-40-million-baht, local Thai housing markets remain comparatively vulnerable due to smaller demand and slower sales velocities compared to investment-driven foreign segments.

Chaichanok and AIS Partner on ‘TH-AI Passport’ to Launch 29-Baht Unlimited AI Internet Package

Digital Economy and Society Minister Chaichanok Chidchob has partnered with Advanced Info Service (AIS) to address internet cost barriers hindering public access to artificial intelligence. AIS has proposed a special package priced at 29 baht per month, offering unlimited internet usage within the TH-AI Passport (AiPASS) application to reduce data expense burdens for students and prepaid system users.

The promotional package supports up to 5 million rights for a duration of one year. According to the ministry, TH-AI Passport registrations have surpassed 1.52 million users, with concurrent users exceeding 500,000 and prompt submissions totaling over 8.7 million. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is also preparing policy guidelines for other telecommunications operators while driving broader national AI adoption and digital equality.

Thailand’s Revenue Department Proceeds with Shin Corp Share Tax Collection, Case Expires in 2035

Thailand’s Revenue Department has confirmed it is proceeding with the collection of taxes related to Shin Corp shares in strict accordance with the law, utilizing asset tracing both domestically and internationally. Somsak Anantawat, Director-General of the Revenue Department, stated that the agency is following proper legal steps, conditions, and methods to ensure full tax collection under standard practices applied to all taxpayers.

The 10-year statute of limitations for the case begins from the final Supreme Court judgment in 2025 and will expire in 2035. Authorities are currently conducting asset tracing, investigations, and coordination with relevant domestic and international agencies regarding property and information.

While exact figures for the tax liability or asset tracing value cannot be disclosed due to ongoing investigations, officials confirmed the amount will only increase according to regulatory criteria rather than decrease. The department emphasized that it is closely examining registration data, evidence, and property ownership without ignoring any details.

Thai Government Warns of Fake Traffic Fine SMS Scams, Advises Using Official State Applications

The Thai government has issued a warning regarding fraudulent SMS messages claiming that recipients have unpaid traffic tickets. The Royal Thai Police reported that scammers are sending messages from unrecognized phone numbers with text such as “RTP: ท่านมียอดค้างชำระ e-Ticket โปรดชำระที่…” along with a shortened link designed to trick citizens into clicking and providing personal and financial information.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Ms. Ploytalay Laksameesangchan emphasized that the Royal Thai Police does not have a policy to demand fine payments through SMS messages containing links or QR codes. Citizens are strongly advised not to click links, scan QR codes, or enter sensitive information such as credit or debit card details when receiving these suspicious notifications.

To safely check for outstanding traffic violations, the government recommends using authorized state channels only. These include the “Thang Rath” application under the “Vehicles” and “Check Traffic Tickets” menu, the “Police Care” application, and the official Royal Thai Police PTM traffic ticket system website at ptm.police.go.th/eTicket. Anyone with questions or needing assistance can also contact the police hotline at 191 or 1599 around the clock.

The Embassy of India in Bangkok has issued an important announcement stating that the Government of India will grant 30-day e-Tourist Visas with double-entry privileges to Thai nationals free of charge. This measure will remain in effect until December 31, 2027, or until further notice.
