Wisma Putra: 55 Malaysians remain uncontactable after Nepal and China disasters

Fifty-five Malaysians are still uncontactable following floods and landslides in Nepal and China, with ongoing efforts to determine their status, according to Wisma Putra.

The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) has completed its mission in Nepal and will brief Wisma Putra on gathered information to decide further actions.

Malaysian embassies in Nepal and China continue liaising with local authorities to support search efforts and keep families informed based on verified information.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — Fifty-five Malaysians remain uncontactable following the floods and landslides in Nepal and China, with efforts to establish the status of each individual still ongoing, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In a statement, the ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART), which returned from Nepal on Monday, will brief Wisma Putra on its deployment and the information gathered during its mission.

During its deployment, SMART conducted search activities in areas that could be safely accessed and where operations were permitted by the Nepalese authorities.

The search included ground operations as well as aerial observations using drones, with the information gathered to be reviewed by Wisma Putra and relevant Malaysian agencies to determine appropriate follow-up action.

Wisma Putra stressed that the conclusion of SMART’s field deployment does not mean efforts to ascertain the status of the Malaysians have ended, nor does it change their current status.

“The 55 Malaysians remain recorded as uncontactable while the relevant processes to establish the status of each individual continue,” the ministry said.

According to the latest information received from Nepal, its authorities are continuing search, verification and identification efforts following the disaster.

As part of Malaysia’s support for Nepal’s disaster-response efforts, SMART conducted on-site training for Nepalese rescue personnel on drone operations and handed over nine drones to the Government of Nepal through the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA).

Malaysia’s follow-up efforts in Nepal will continue through the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu, which will obtain information directly from NDRRMA and other relevant Nepalese authorities.

The embassy will also maintain engagement with hospitals and other relevant agencies and conduct further checks or visits where safety conditions and approval from the Nepalese authorities permit.

In China, the Malaysian Embassy in Beijing will continue engaging with the relevant Chinese authorities concerning Malaysians affected by the disaster and any information that could assist in establishing their status.

Wisma Putra said it understood the concern among families still awaiting certainty regarding their loved ones and remained in direct contact with the immediate next of kin.

It said any verified development concerning an individual Malaysian would be communicated to the immediate next of kin before any public announcement was made.

The ministry also urged the public and media to respect the privacy of the families concerned and refrain from speculation regarding any individual whose status had yet to be confirmed.

作为马来西亚支持尼泊尔灾害应对工作的一部分，SMART 对尼泊尔救援人员进行了无人机操作的现场培训，并通过国家减灾风险管理署 (NDRRMA) 向尼泊尔政府移交了九架无人机。

马来西亚将继续通过其驻加德满都大使馆在尼泊尔开展后续工作，该大使馆将直接从尼泊尔国家减灾管理署和其他相关尼泊尔当局获取信息。

大使馆还将继续与医院和其他相关机构保持联系，并在安全条件允许且获得尼泊尔当局批准的情况下，进行进一步的检查或访问。

在中国，马来西亚驻北京大使馆将继续与中国有关部门沟通，了解受灾马来西亚公民的情况以及任何有助于确定其身份的信息。

外交部表示，他们理解仍在等待亲人下落确定消息的家属们的担忧，并一直与死者家属保持直接联系。

声明称，任何经核实涉及马来西亚公民的事件进展，都会在发布任何公开声明之前通知其直系亲属。

该部还敦促公众和媒体尊重相关家庭的隐私，不要对任何身份尚未得到确认的个人进行猜测。
