Worker killed after hose strikes him at Jurong construction site; MOM investigating

A 35-year-old construction worker died after he was struck by a hose while carrying out foundation works at a construction site along Jurong Port Road on Friday (Sept 11).

Responding to queries from AsiaOne, the police and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to a work-related incident at a construction site at 37 Jurong Port Road at about 8.25pm.

A 35-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic, said the police.

Based on preliminary investigations, the police do not suspect foul play. Police investigations are ongoing.

In a statement to AsiaOne, a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the ministry is investigating the case involving a construction worker who died after being struck by a hose connected to a compressed air pump.

MOM identified Keller Foundations (S E Asia) as the occupier and employer of the worksite, and said the company has been instructed to stop all concreting works at the worksite.

"As a general safety measure, compressed air systems must be properly isolated and fully depressurised before any hoses, tools or fittings are disconnected," said the spokesperson.

"Measures must be taken to prevent hoses and other pressurised components from moving unexpectedly when connections are released."

The ministry added that failing to secure such systems can result in hose whipping, flying projectiles and physical injury.

A spokesperson for Keller Foundations said the company was deeply saddened by the fatal incident at its worksite on Jurong Port Road.

"Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the individual and we are providing as much support to them as we can at this difficult time. We are also working closely with the relevant authorities," said the spokesperson.

Workplace fatalities rise in first half of 2026

In a report published on Sept 8, MOM said Singapore recorded a record-low major workplace injury rate in the first half of 2026, although workplace fatalities rose to 21 during the period.

The annualised major injury rate, excluding platform workers, fell from 15.8 per 100,000 workers in the first half of 2025 to 14.6 in the first half of 2026.

However, the annualised overall fatal injury rate rose to 1.1 per 100,000 workers, up from 0.97 in the first half of 2025 and 0.96 in the second half of 2025.

发言人表示：“我们向逝者的家人、朋友和同事致以最深切的慰问，并将尽我们所能为他们提供这方面的支持。同时，我们也正与相关部门密切合作。”
