Sixteen drownings in Pahang this year, Bomba urges public to respect warning signs

KUANTAN, Sept 14 — A total of 16 drowning deaths have been recorded in Pahang so far this year, and the public is urged to prioritise safety when engaging in activities near rivers, waterfalls, and beaches.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) assistant director of operations and rescue, Mohd Salahuddin Isa, said key safety measures include heeding warning signs and refraining from swimming in areas identified as dangerous.

He added that visitors must also be vigilant regarding the “water surge” phenomenon particularly when at waterfalls, rapids, and rivers.

“To date, 16 drowning cases resulting in 16 deaths have been recorded across the state; we advise the public to always prioritise safety and understand the risks associated with recreational areas.

“Never swim in areas marked with red flags or ‘No Swimming’ warning signs,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Salahuddin advised that if a person appears to be drowning, members of the public should not immediately jump into the water unless they possess rescue skills.

Instead, assistance can be provided using the ‘Reach, Throw, Row, Go’ concept: trying to reach the victim with a long object like a stick or pole (Reach), throwing a floating object such as a lifebuoy (Throw), using a boat if available (Row), or calling the 999 emergency line to dispatch the Water Rescue Team (PPDA) to the location (Go). — Bernama
