Chief of Defence Force: MAF proposes reinstating multi‑agency border‑security framework used under former national task force

The Malaysian Armed Forces proposed reviving a multi-agency framework to reinforce border security, involving various enforcement agencies including the police and immigration authorities.

Gen Tan Sri Malek Razak Sulaiman highlighted the effectiveness of coordinated agency operations, as previously demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic under the National Task Force.

Malaysia maintains border surveillance and collaborates with neighbouring countries, while emphasising integrity among personnel to combat corruption.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 14 — The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) has submitted a proposal to the National Security Council (NSC) to reinstate a multi-agency operational framework modelled on the National Task Force (NTF) to bolster national border security.

Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Malek Razak Sulaiman said the proposal, submitted through the National Operational Management Committee, would bring together various agencies including the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), the Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM), and the Immigration Department of Malaysia (JIM).

He said the strategic coordination of enforcement agencies has proven more effective in addressing security vulnerabilities along the country’s land and maritime borders.

“We executed this (integrated operation) previously via the NTF during the Covid-19 pandemic, and it proved effective in coordinating multi-agency efforts before the mechanism was changed for specific reasons.

“Therefore, I believe elements of that approach should be reinstated, even if not on a large scale, to address current security challenges and vulnerabilities,” he said during a Special Media Interview with the Chief of Defence Forces in conjunction with the 93rd MAF Day at Wisma Pertahanan here today.

Malek Razak said the MAF conducts round-the-clock surveillance along the national border and regularly detains intruders, though not all cases are reported to the media.

“Malaysia also maintains close cooperation with neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Indonesia to tackle cross-border security issues through intelligence sharing,” he explained.

Touching on integrity issues, he said the main measure against corruption at the border is instilling integrity and high moral values among personnel.

The NTF, was established to carry out Op Benteng to curb the influx of illegal immigrants during the pandemic in 2020, was officially disbanded on December 31, 2022. — Bernama

“因此，我认为即使不大规模地恢复这种做法的部分内容，也应该恢复，以应对当前的安全挑战和漏洞，”他在今天于国防军总司令官邸举行的第93届马来西亚武装部队日特别媒体采访中说道。

马利克·拉扎克表示，马来西亚武装部队对国界线进行全天候监视，并定期拘留入侵者，但并非所有案件都会向媒体报道。

他还解释说：“马来西亚也与泰国和印度尼西亚等邻国保持密切合作，通过情报共享来解决跨境安全问题。”

谈到诚信问题时，他说，打击边境腐败的主要措施是向工作人员灌输诚信和高尚的道德价值观。
