New York joins 22 other states and Washington DC in suing to block the “Public Charge” rule which would give immigration officials wide discretion to deny green cards, visas, or admission if they are deemed likely to need public benefits such as food stamps, Medicaid or housing vouchers. The legislation is set to go into effect on Friday.
