Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul flew to Hanoi on Monday, accompanying Their Majesties the King and Queen on an historic State Visit marking 50 years of Thai-Vietnamese relations. It came within hours of a major political verdict at home. The Election Commission sent 77 people, including 26 serving senators, towards Supreme Court proceedings over the disputed 2024 Senate selection. Crucially, Mr Anutin and influential Bhumjaithai figure Newin Chidchob escaped referral. The ruling came as Thailand and Vietnam deepen strategic, commercial and security ties while competing fiercely for foreign investment, technology and manufacturing projects across Southeast Asia.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul accompanied Their Majesties the King and Queen to Hanoi on Monday for an historic State Visit. Significantly, he left Government House just hours before the Election Commission ruled on the explosive 2024 Senate collusion case.

The three-day royal visit marks 50 years of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Vietnam. It comes as the neighbouring economies deepen ties while competing fiercely for foreign investment.

At 12.45 pm, the Prime Minister and Interior Minister departed Government House to join the royal entourage. Minister attached to the Prime Minister’s Office Paradorn Prisnanantakul saw him off at his car. As the vehicle moved away, Mr Anutin lowered the window and waved towards waiting reporters. “I’m going to Vietnam soon,” he told them. However, he did not answer questions about the EC ruling due later that afternoon.

Election Commission sends 77 towards court while Anutin and Newin escape referral in Senate case

Within hours, the commission delivered its long-awaited verdict. It referred 77 people towards Supreme Court proceedings, including 26 serving senators. In contrast, political figures accused of assisting candidates escaped referral. They included Mr Anutin and influential Bhumjaithai figure Newin Chidchob. Consequently, the ruling landed while the Prime Minister was outside Thailand on royal duty.

Mr Anutin’s journey to Hanoi was not another bilateral mission as prime minister. Instead, he accompanied King Maha Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida during an unprecedented State Visit. The visit runs from September 14 to 16. Notably, it is the first by a Thai King and Queen since diplomatic relations began in 1976.

Their Majesties arrived aboard the royal aircraft at Noi Bai International Airport at 4.17 pm local time. They travelled at the invitation of To Lam, Vietnam’s Communist Party General Secretary and President. The visit forms a centrepiece of celebrations marking five decades of diplomatic relations. More broadly, it reflects a relationship expanding rapidly across commerce, investment and regional cooperation.

Thai Ambassador to Vietnam Urawadee Sripirum was granted an audience following the royal aircraft’s arrival. She presented Le Cong Dung, Director-General of Vietnam’s Protocol Department, to His Majesty. Mr Le then escorted Their Majesties from the aircraft. Separately, Le Khanh Hai, Vietnam’s minister of honour for the visit, joined senior officials at the airport.

His Majesty subsequently proceeded through the honour guard. Their Majesties then boarded a royal vehicle and travelled into Hanoi. The Vietnamese government arranged the Fairmont Hotel as their accommodation. At 5.18 pm local time, the royal party arrived there for another formal welcome.

Saranya Paliwong, Minister Counsellor at the Royal Thai Embassy, was among those receiving Their Majesties. Embassy officials also attended. In addition, heads of Team Thailand offices in Vietnam attended with their spouses. Members of the Thai community joined the reception. Fairmont Hotel general manager Jean-Francois Brun and hotel staff also welcomed the royal party.

The State Visit comes during a significant shift in relations between Bangkok and Hanoi. Thailand and Vietnam remain major economic competitors within Southeast Asia. Both court manufacturers, technology groups and international capital seeking production bases in the region. Yet that rivalry has developed alongside much closer political and commercial cooperation.

Vietnam has built a formidable export manufacturing economy and attracted substantial foreign investment. Thailand remains a regional automotive, industrial and tourism centre. More recently, both countries have targeted electronics, electric vehicles and advanced technology. As a result, they increasingly compete for many of the same international projects.

Thailand and Vietnam compete for major foreign projects while political and commercial ties grow closer

At the same time, their commercial relationship has expanded. Thai companies have extensive interests in Vietnam, while Bangkok wants more Vietnamese investment entering Thailand. Both governments also want stronger industrial links. In parallel, they are seeking supply chains capable of connecting production across mainland Southeast Asia.

The political relationship has strengthened alongside those economic links. In May 2025, the countries elevated relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. That created a broader framework covering economic, political and security cooperation. Since then, senior exchanges between Bangkok and Hanoi have accelerated.

Vietnamese leader To Lam visited Thailand in May this year. Mr Anutin followed with his own official visit to Vietnam on June 8 and 9. Thai House Speaker Sophon Zaram subsequently visited from August 5 to 7. Against this backdrop, the royal visit represents the highest-level engagement during the 50th anniversary year.

Thailand and Vietnam are close regional neighbours, although they share no land border. Their interests increasingly overlap across ASEAN and the Greater Mekong Subregion. Likewise, both governments want stronger regional transport connections. Trade routes linking Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam are therefore increasingly important.

Strategic partnership grows as Bangkok and Hanoi strengthen trade, transport and regional connections

Transport and logistics have become central to that effort. Both countries want improved road, aviation and coastal shipping links. As part of this, better connections can help manufacturers move components through increasingly integrated supply chains. Vietnamese ports also provide potential links for trade moving across mainland Southeast Asia.

Technology has opened another competitive front. Thailand and Vietnam both seek artificial intelligence, digital industries, semiconductors and green investment. Moreover, both want multinational companies diversifying production across Asia. Each country is therefore seeking a larger place inside global industrial supply chains.

Nevertheless, economic rivalry has not prevented closer bilateral ties. Both governments have backed increased private-sector cooperation and two-way investment. They have also promoted closer links between their respective business communities. In practice, investment competition and economic cooperation are developing simultaneously.

Mr Anutin addressed that balance during his own Hanoi visit three months ago. He led government, military and business representatives on his first official visit as prime minister. During the trip, he met Vietnamese leaders and attended the ASEAN Future Forum. Trade and investment featured prominently in the discussions.

Thailand and Vietnam expand transport and technology links amid fierce competition for global investment

The Prime Minister sought continued Vietnamese support for Thai companies investing there. Conversely, he encouraged Vietnamese businesses to increase their investments in Thailand. Both governments have promoted a more balanced two-way investment relationship. They have also backed stronger connections between their industrial sectors.

On another front, security cooperation has expanded alongside commerce. Thailand and Vietnam support closer coordination against transnational crime, trafficking and cybercrime. Both also have an interest in stability across mainland Southeast Asia. Their strategic relationship therefore extends well beyond conventional trade diplomacy.

Tourism provides another important connection. Thai travellers visit Vietnam in substantial numbers, while Vietnamese visitors are an important market for Thailand. Meanwhile, growing air links have brought the countries’ major cities closer together. Cross-border payment connections have become another part of their expanding commercial relationship.

The royal programme gives those growing ties their most prominent diplomatic expression. Their Majesties will lay wreaths at the Bac Son Martyrs’ Monument. They will also visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. Afterwards, an official welcoming ceremony will form part of the State Visit.

Anutin pushes balanced investment as Thailand and Vietnam widen security and commercial cooperation

Their Majesties will meet President To Lam and his spouse. In addition, they will grant audiences to senior Vietnamese leaders. These include Vietnam’s prime minister and National Assembly chairman Tran Thanh Man. Later, President To Lam and his spouse will host a State Banquet at Tonkin Palace.

Cultural and religious engagements also feature prominently. Their Majesties are scheduled to visit Ngoc Son Temple for cultural performances. On Wednesday, they will visit Quan Su Pagoda. The pagoda houses the Executive Council headquarters of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha. They will also visit the Thai Cultural Centre at Hanoi University.

For Mr Anutin, the visit came amid an exceptional political backdrop at home. When his car left Government House, the EC had not announced its Senate decision. Reporters were therefore waiting for his reaction. The case had become one of the country’s most politically charged investigations.

The original investigation concerned 229 people. They included 138 serving senators, politicians, former candidates and others. Investigators examined claims of organised voting and assistance during the disputed 2024 Senate selection. Crucially, the scale of the investigation placed a large section of the current Senate under scrutiny.

Royal programme combines top-level diplomacy with cultural and religious engagements across Hanoi

Political figures were also accused of assisting candidates. Mr Anutin was among them. Mr Newin was another. By Monday lunchtime, however, commissioners had yet to reveal which cases would proceed towards court.

The Prime Minister offered no comment on the looming decision. Instead, he waved through his car window and addressed his immediate destination. “I’m going to Vietnam soon,” Mr Anutin told reporters. He then continued towards his royal duties.

Hours later, the EC dramatically narrowed the case. Commissioners referred 77 people towards Supreme Court proceedings. Of those, 26 were serving senators. Yet every political figure accused of assisting candidates escaped referral.

Accordingly, Mr Anutin was not among those sent towards court proceedings. Neither was Mr Newin. The ruling reduced a case involving 229 people to 77 referrals. Likewise, the number of serving senators facing referral fell from 138 investigated to 26.

The decision changed the immediate shape of the Senate controversy. It separated the cases moving towards court from those ending inside the EC process. At the same time, the Prime Minister was already in Vietnam with the royal delegation.

The sequence unfolded within a few hours. Shortly before 1 pm, Mr Anutin left Government House while reporters called after him. By late afternoon, Their Majesties had landed at Noi Bai International Airport. Back in Bangkok, commissioners delivered the ruling awaited throughout the political establishment.

The contrast was sharp. In Hanoi, Thailand marked half a century of diplomatic relations with an increasingly important regional partner. In Bangkok, the EC delivered a ruling carrying immediate consequences for the Senate. The Prime Minister’s political circle was directly affected by the outcome.

Monday also demonstrated how rapidly relations with Vietnam have risen on Thailand’s diplomatic agenda. Only three months earlier, Mr Anutin led his own delegation to Hanoi. This time, he returned as part of the delegation accompanying Their Majesties.

The distinction was important. His June visit centred on government-to-government relations, business and investment. Monday’s journey formed part of an historic royal engagement. Even so, both visits came during a period of unusually intensive contact between the countries.

Thailand and Vietnam have spent five decades developing diplomatic relations. Recently, those ties have moved into a broader strategic phase. Commerce, technology, security and regional connectivity now sit alongside traditional diplomacy.

Investment rivalry remains fierce. Both economies want factories, technology projects and international capital moving into Southeast Asia. Each also wants a larger role in global supply chains. Despite this, both governments continue pushing bilateral trade and investment links.

For Thailand, Vietnam offers a large neighbouring market and an expanding manufacturing base. For Vietnam, Thailand remains an established regional economy with deep industrial networks. Their businesses increasingly operate across both markets. Their governments are therefore building links while their economies compete.

The royal visit puts that changing relationship on its highest ceremonial level. It also marks the 50th anniversary with meetings involving Vietnam’s most senior leadership. In addition, the programme reaches beyond politics into culture, Buddhism and the Thai community in Vietnam.

For Mr Anutin, Monday brought that diplomatic milestone together with a seismic political decision at home. At 12.45 pm, he departed Government House to accompany Their Majesties. At that point, the Senate verdict remained only hours away.

The State Visit continues until Wednesday. Its programme places Thailand’s growing relationship with Vietnam firmly in focus. The two countries remain economic rivals, particularly for manufacturing and international investment. Even so, their strategic, commercial and regional links continue to deepen.

Monday’s opening hours captured both stories. Their Majesties began an historic visit marking five decades of relations with Vietnam. Simultaneously, Thailand entered another phase of the bitter controversy surrounding its 2024 Senate selection.

Mr Anutin stood at the intersection of both events. He left Government House as reporters pressed him about the approaching EC decision. “I’m going to Vietnam soon,” he told them. Hours later, the commission delivered its verdict without referring him.
