Anwar calls for stronger Malaysia-India synergy in E&E and semiconductor sectors

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim urged Malaysia and India to strengthen collaboration in the electrical and electronics (E&E) and semiconductor sectors to leverage each other's strengths.

Speaking during an engagement in Calicut, he emphasized Malaysia's position as a key player in these sectors in Southeast Asia and highlighted India's considerable capabilities.

Anwar noted the importance of reinforcing synergies to enhance capabilities and benefit mutually, and he advocated for increased two-way investment between Malaysia and Kerala to bolster trade and investment ties.

KERALAM, Sept 15 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim called for Malaysia and India to strengthen synergy in the electrical and electronics (E&E) and semiconductor sectors to enhance their respective capabilities and benefit from each other’s strengths.

He said Malaysia was positioning itself as a key player in the E&E and semiconductor sectors in Southeast Asia, while India also possessed considerable strength in these areas.

“It is an emerging economy and is focusing more in terms of E&E and semiconductor in Southeast Asia, and energy economy we are probably about the largest now, including export to the United States.

“With the strength of the E&E, semiconductor of India, can you imagine if that synergy is fortified to enhance our capability and make sure that we benefit from one another. I think it is important,” said Anwar.

He said this in his remarks at the Hi-Tea Engagement with the Governor of Kerala, Minister for Industries & Commerce, and Prominent Indian Business Leaders in Calicut, here yesterday.

Around 30 companies from India, Malaysia and the Gulf countries participated in the engagement, representing sectors including medical and healthcare, semiconductors, construction, artificial intelligence (AI), digital technology, information technology, engineering, retail, renewable energy and transportation.

The Prime Minister said the engagement provided an opportunity to strengthen business-to-business linkages and explore greater cooperation in high-value sectors.

Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, noted that India was an important emerging economy and Malaysia should continue to diversify its trade and investment relationships while maintaining strong ties with existing major partners.

Modern diplomatic relations between Putrajaya and New Delhi were established in 1957, shortly after Malaysia gained independence, and India remains Malaysia’s largest trading partner in South Asia, with bilateral trade reaching US$18.55 billion (RM79.33 billion) in 2025.

Anwar also highlighted the historical links between Keralam and Southeast Asia, particularly through the Malabar Coast, which he described as an important part of the region’s cultural, religious and intellectual history.

He said Keralam’s historical connections with Southeast Asia should be fully utilised to further strengthen cooperation between Malaysia and Keralam, particularly in trade and investment.

Anwar stated that Malaysia should promote increased two-way investment, encouraging capital flows from Malaysia to Kerala, as well as from Kerala and neighbouring Indian states into Malaysia.

Also present were Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani, Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, Malaysia’s Chargé d’Affaires, Deputy High Commissioner Sharifah Ezneeda Wafa, and the Consul General of Malaysia to South India K. Saravana Kumar.

Anwar then departed from Keralam for an official visit to the Maldives after completing his five-day working visit to India.

来自印度、马来西亚和海湾国家的约 30 家公司参加了此次交流活动，这些公司涵盖医疗保健、半导体、建筑、人工智能 (AI)、数字技术、信息技术、工程、零售、可再生能源和交通运输等行业。

总理表示，此次交流为加强企业间的联系、探索在高价值领域开展更大合作提供了机会。

安华同时也是马来西亚财政部长，他指出印度是一个重要的新兴经济体，马来西亚应该在与现有主要伙伴保持紧密联系的同时，继续实现贸易和投资关系的多元化。

马来西亚独立后不久，布城和新德里于 1957 年建立了现代外交关系。印度仍然是马来西亚在南亚最大的贸易伙伴，双边贸易额在 2025 年将达到 185.5 亿美元（793.3 亿令吉）。

安瓦尔还强调了喀拉拉邦与东南亚之间的历史联系，特别是通过马拉巴尔海岸，他称马拉巴尔海岸是该地区文化、宗教和思想史的重要组成部分。

他表示，应充分利用喀拉拉邦与东南亚的历史联系，进一步加强马来西亚和喀拉拉邦之间的合作，尤其是在贸易和投资领域。

安华表示，马来西亚应该促进双向投资，鼓励资本从马来西亚流向喀拉拉邦，以及从喀拉拉邦和邻近的印度各邦流向马来西亚。

出席的还有投资、贸易及工业部长拿督斯里佐哈里阿卜杜勒加尼、人力资源部长拿督斯里拉马南、马来西亚临时代办、副高级专员沙里法·埃兹尼达·瓦法和马来西亚驻南印度总领事萨拉瓦娜·库马尔。

安瓦尔结束对印度的五天工作访问后，离开喀拉拉邦前往马尔代夫进行正式访问。
