More than 2.6 million Malaysians visited Indonesia in 2025 as neighbours gear up for 70 years of diplomatic ties

Malaysia and Indonesia are anticipating the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027, as their bilateral cooperation strengthens across various sectors.

The relationship, characterized by shared history, language, and culture, has enabled both nations to address challenges through dialogue and mutual respect.

Economic ties are robust, with significant trade and investment activities, while people-to-people connections remain vital, evidenced by high tourism exchanges.

Both countries continue to collaborate closely on educational initiatives and uphold commitments to regional stability and prosperity within the ASEAN framework.

JAKARTA, Sept 16 — Malaysia and Indonesia are looking forward to the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2027, as bilateral cooperation between the close neighbours and strategic partners continues to gain momentum.

Malaysia’s Chargé d’Affaires to Indonesia Farzamie Sarkawi said this at the Malaysia Day celebration hosted by the Embassy of Malaysia in Jakarta, here on Tuesday night, highlighting the unique relationship between the two countries, which share history, language, and culture.

“We are not only neighbours, but also brothers and sisters who share history, language, and culture,” he said in his remarks, adding that the strength of Malaysia-Indonesia relations has enabled both countries to address obstacles and challenges through dialogue, mutual respect, and a spirit of friendship and togetherness.

The celebration was attended by Malaysia’s Ambassador-designate to Indonesia Datuk Muzaffar Shah Mustafa; Indonesia’s Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto; Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra, and Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian.

Farzamie said bilateral cooperation continues to gain momentum, with trade reaching US$34.22 billion (US$1=RM4.08) in 2025, while Malaysia remained Indonesia’s fourth-largest investor with investments amounting to US$4.5 billion.

He said people-to-people connections also remained strong, with more than 2.63 million Malaysian tourists visiting Indonesia last year, making Malaysia the largest source of foreign visitors to the republic, while 4.26 million Indonesian tourists visited Malaysia.

Farzamie said the leaders of both countries maintained close working and personal relations. This was reflected in the Annual Consultation between Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and President Prabowo Subianto in Jakarta last year and Anwar’s special visit to the Indonesian capital on March 27 this year.

He said Malaysia and Indonesia also successfully convened the 17th Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation in Jakarta in June and the fourth Joint Trade and Investment Committee meeting this month.

On Asean, Farzamie said Malaysia remained committed to working closely with all Asean member states to ensure that the regional grouping remains a strong, united, and influential force for peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

Meanwhile, Brian in his remarks said education has long been an important pillar of Indonesia-Malaysia cooperation, with both countries continuing to strengthen cooperation through established frameworks and commitments since the signing of a joint agreement in education and culture in 1972.

“I believe that the establishment of a joint Indonesia-Malaysia academic consortium under this framework will further deepen collaboration among our institutions of higher learning, while creating greater opportunities for academic exchange and joint programmes,” he said.

Brian, who conveyed Prabowo’s greetings and best wishes to the Malaysian government and people, said these efforts would contribute to a more harmonious, prosperous, and resilient Asean, where the peoples of the region could thrive and the two nations continue to grow side by side.

法尔扎米表示，双边合作持续升温，预计到 2025 年，双边贸易额将达到 342.2 亿美元（1 美元 = 4.08 令吉），而马来西亚仍是印尼第四大投资国，投资额达 45 亿美元。

他还表示，两国人民之间的联系依然紧密，去年有超过 263 万马来西亚游客到访印度尼西亚，使马来西亚成为印尼最大的外国游客来源国，而有 426 万印尼游客到访马来西亚。

法尔扎米表示，两国领导人保持着密切的工作和私人关系。这体现在去年马来西亚总理拿督斯里安瓦尔·易卜拉欣与印尼总统普拉博沃·苏比安托在雅加达举行的年度磋商，以及安瓦尔今年3月27日对印尼首都的特别访问。

他表示，马来西亚和印度尼西亚还于6月在雅加达成功召开了第17届双边合作联合委员会会议，并于本月召开了第四届联合贸易和投资委员会会议。

关于东盟，法尔扎米表示，马来西亚将继续致力于与所有东盟成员国密切合作，以确保该区域组织继续成为维护本地区和平、稳定与繁荣的强大、团结和有影响力的力量。

与此同时，布莱恩在讲话中表示，教育长期以来一直是印尼和马来西亚合作的重要支柱，自 1972 年签署教育和文化联合协议以来，两国通过既定框架和承诺不断加强合作。

他表示：“我相信，在此框架下建立印尼-马来西亚联合学术联盟，将进一步深化我们两国高等院校之间的合作，同时为学术交流和联合项目创造更多机会。”

布莱恩向马来西亚政府和人民转达了普拉博沃的问候和美好祝愿，并表示这些努力将有助于建设一个更加和谐、繁荣和有韧性的东盟，使该地区的人民能够繁荣发展，两国也能继续并肩成长。
