Smart ready for immediate deployment to flood-hit Nepal, says deputy minister

Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni affirmed Malaysia's readiness to deploy the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) to Nepal, following a visit to the Nepalese Embassy.

He extended sympathies and emphasized the Malaysian government's willingness to assist Nepal amid the recent devastating floods.

In response, Nepal's Chargé d'Affaires Mudita Bajracharya expressed gratitude for Malaysia's condolences and financial support.

The floods have devastated the region, resulting in over 1,200 fatalities and 4,200 people missing.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni reiterated the government’s stance that the Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Smart) is on standby for immediate deployment to Nepal during a visit to the Embassy of Nepal here on Thursday.

In a Facebook post, the Foreign Ministry, also known as Wisma Putra, said Lukanisman also emphasised that the government stands ready to provide assistance to the Nepal government.

“He conveyed his prayers and deepest sympathies to the Government and people of Nepal, especially to the affected family members in facing this trying time,” Wisma Putra posted.

Lukanisman also signed a Book of Condolence during the visit.

Meanwhile, Nepal Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Mudita Bajracharya, on behalf of the Nepal government, thanked the deputy minister for the condolences and solidarity with the people of Nepal during this time of grief.

“Bajracharya also expressed gratitude to the Government of Malaysia for its generosity in extending financial support,” the embassy posted on Facebook.
