EC reaffirms commitment to fairness and transparency on 69th anniversary

On the occasion of its 69th anniversary, Malaysia's Election Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its dedication to managing elections with fairness, transparency, efficiency, and integrity.

Over its history since being established in 1957, the EC has evolved to enhance the country's democratic system through improved service delivery.

Initially composed of three members, the EC expanded its membership progressively, particularly after the formation of Malaysia, to include regional representation.

The commission continues to be a pivotal institution in maintaining and strengthening the democratic processes in Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 4 — The Election Commission (EC), which marks its 69th anniversary today, has reaffirmed its commitment to managing the country’s electoral process fairly, transparently, efficiently and with integrity.

In a Facebook post today, the EC said that over its 69-year history, it had continued to evolve with the times in strengthening the country’s democratic system through elections.

The EC has also continued to improve its service delivery to the public, with greater efficiency and transparency.

“May the EC continue to move forward with integrity and remain a trusted democratic institution in safeguarding and strengthening the country’s democratic process.

“The EC, efficient and transparent,” according to the post.

The EC was established on Sept 4, 1957, in accordance with Article 114 of the Federal Constitution, with its membership initially comprising a chairman and two members.

Datuk Dr Mustafa Albakri Hassan served as the commission’s first chairman, with Lee Ewe Boon and Ditt Singh as its two members.

Following the formation of Malaysia in 1963, the commission’s membership was increased to three, with the additional member appointed from either Sabah or Sarawak on a rotating basis.

The EC was expanded to seven members in 2002, comprising a chairman, deputy chairman and five members, including one representative each from Sabah and Sarawak. — Bernama

选举委员会于 1957 年 9 月 4 日根据联邦宪法第 114 条成立，其成员最初由一名主席和两名成员组成。

拿督穆斯塔法·阿尔巴克里·哈桑博士担任该委员会的第一任主席，李友文和迪特·辛格担任该委员会的两名成员。

1963年马来西亚成立后，委员会成员增加到三人，新增成员由沙巴或砂拉越轮流任命。
