Anwar: Najib house arrest does not weaken govt’s fight against corruption

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim stated that the conditional pardon for former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, does not compromise the government's commitment to fighting corruption and abuse of power.

Anwar emphasized that all corruption cases must proceed in accordance with the law, highlighting the importance of national stability, legal implications, and the Attorney General's advice in the decision-making process.

The conditional pardon, granted by His Majesty the King during the Pardons Board meeting, requires Najib to pay a RM50 million fine and will last until August 23, 2028.

Anwar reiterated the necessity of public support to ensure the law is upheld against misconduct and abuse of power.

PUTRAJAYA, Sept 18 — The conditional pardon allowing former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest does not weaken the government’s resolve to fight corruption and power abuse, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said all corruption cases, including ongoing proceedings involving Najib, must continue in accordance with the law.

“As Prime Minister, my duty is to provide advice on the legal implications, national stability and the principle of the rule of law, while also taking into account the Attorney General’s detailed written advice.

“But ultimately, the Constitution provides for the powers of His Majesty the King, and I hope we can accept the decision,” he told reporters after Friday prayers at Surau Nur Perdana in Precinct 10 here today.

Anwar said Malaysia must remain firm in tackling corruption, with public support needed to ensure misconduct or abuse of power for personal enrichment is not taken lightly.

“The same applies to other corruption cases. This country must be saved, and we need firmness with the support of all Malaysians to ensure the law is no longer taken lightly when there is misconduct or abuse of power to enrich any leader or individual. This is our stance,” he said.

Asked whether clear standard operating procedures (SOPs) were needed for house arrest, Anwar said the matter fell under the Home Ministry’s jurisdiction.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today granted Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.

首相拿督斯里安华·易卜拉欣表示，对前首相拿督斯里纳吉·敦·拉扎克的有条件赦免，允许他居家监禁服完剩余刑期，这并不会动摇政府打击腐败和滥用职权的决心。

安华强调，所有腐败案件都必须依法进行，并强调了国家稳定、法律影响以及总检察长在决策过程中的建议的重要性。

国王陛下在赦免委员会会议上授予纳吉有条件赦免，要求纳吉支付 5000 万令吉的罚款，赦免期至 2028 年 8 月 23 日。

“其他贪腐案件也一样。这个国家必须被拯救，我们需要全体马来西亚人民的支持，坚定不移地追究任何领导人或个人滥用职权、谋取私利的行为，确保法律不再被轻视。这就是我们的立场。”他说道。

当被问及居家监禁是否需要明确的标准操作程序（SOP）时，安华表示，此事属于内政部的管辖范围。
