Seoul freezes fuel price caps amid Mideast tensions

SEOUL, Sept. 18 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean government on Friday kept its price ceilings for fuel products unchanged for the third consecutive period amid elevated oil prices and escalating tensions in the Middle East, the industry ministry said.

Maximum prices for regular gasoline, diesel and kerosene supplied by local refiners to gas stations will remain unchanged at 1,784 won (US$1.30), 1,773 won and 1,380 won per liter, respectively, for the next four weeks starting Saturday, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.

The government has kept the current price ceilings in place for the past 12 weeks, since June 27, after lowering them to their current levels a day earlier.

"International oil prices jumped above $100 per barrel on Sept. 16, with Brent crude exceeding that level, pushing up prices of petrochemical products. The price freeze is aimed at easing upward pressure on consumer prices," the ministry said.

The government introduced fuel price caps in mid-March to stabilize domestic fuel prices amid supply chain disruptions stemming from the U.S.-Iran war in the Middle East.

It plans to adjust the emergency measures as needed while closely monitoring developments in the Middle East and the South Korean economy.

首尔，9月18日（韩联社）——韩国产业通商资源部周五表示，鉴于油价高企和中东紧张局势升级，韩国政府连续第三个时期维持燃油产品价格上限不变。

据韩国产业通商资源部消息，从本周六开始的未来四周内，由当地炼油厂向加油站供应的普通汽油、柴油和煤油的最高价格将分别维持在每升1784韩元（1.30美元）、1773韩元和1380韩元不变。

自 6 月 27 日以来，政府已连续 12 周维持当前的价格上限，而此前一天，政府才将价格上限下调至目前的水平。

“9月16日，国际油价突破每桶100美元，布伦特原油价格更是超过这一水平，推高了石化产品的价格。此次价格冻结旨在缓解消费者价格上涨的压力，”该部表示。

为稳定受中东美伊战争导致的供应链中断影响的国内燃油价格，政府于3月中旬出台了燃油价格上限政策。

它计划在密切关注中东局势和韩国经济发展的同时，根据需要调整紧急措施。
