MCMC steps up social media monitoring as Melaka election preparations gather pace

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will continue monitoring social media in preparation for the upcoming Melaka state election, cautioning internet users against discussing sensitive 3R issues—religion, race, and royalty.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching emphasized the importance of democratic campaigning that maintains societal harmony.

This comes as the state gears up for the election, with the dissolution of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly anticipated by the end of December, following the resolution of certain administrative matters.

MELAKA, Sept 18 — The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will continue monitoring social media content ahead of the Melaka state election and reminds internet users not to touch on 3R issues involving religion, race and royalty.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the monitoring was part of MCMC’s role as the regulator of the communications and multimedia sector, with the commission also working with other enforcement agencies when necessary.

“MCMC, as the regulator, we will always monitor social media content. Our message to all internet users is not to touch on 3R issues.

“We all have the right to campaign, but campaign democratically and do not touch on sensitive issues that could affect harmony in society,” she told reporters after a working visit to inspect the progress of the Public Higher Education Institution Wi-Fi project at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) here today.

Her remarks come as preparations for the state election gather pace, although the date for dissolving the Melaka State Legislative Assembly has yet to be fixed.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh was reported yesterday as saying that several state administrative matters needed to be resolved before the assembly could be dissolved, to ensure the relevant plans proceeded smoothly.

Ab Rauf, who is also Melaka Barisan Nasional chairman, said the state assembly must be dissolved by the end of December, when its current term expires. — Bernama

马六甲，9月18日讯——马来西亚通讯及多媒体委员会（MCMC）将在马六甲州选举前继续监控社交媒体内容，并提醒网民不要触及涉及宗教、种族和皇室的3R问题。

通讯部副部长张念群表示，监督工作是通讯及多媒体委员会作为通讯及多媒体行业监管机构职责的一部分，该委员会也会在必要时与其他执法机构合作。

“作为监管机构，马来西亚通信与多媒体委员会（MCMC）将持续监控社交媒体内容。我们向所有互联网用户传达的信息是：不要触及3R（减少、再利用、再循环）相关议题。”

“我们都有竞选的权利，但要以民主的方式进行竞选，不要触及可能影响社会和谐的敏感问题，”她在今天对马来西亚马六甲技术大学 (UTeM) 进行工作访问，视察公立高等教育机构 Wi-Fi 项目进展情况后告诉记者。

在她发表这番言论之际，州选举的筹备工作正在加紧进行，尽管解散马六甲州立法议会的日期尚未确定。

据报道，首席部长拿督斯里阿布·拉乌夫·尤索夫昨天表示，在解散州议会之前，需要解决一些州行政事务，以确保相关计划顺利进行。
