MACC says Najib’s conditional pardon does not alter ongoing 1MDB case status quo

The status of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case involving Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak remains unchanged despite his conditional pardon, according to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman.

The Chief Commissioner emphasized that each case is distinct and must be handled separately based on the specific issues and investigations involved.

Najib's conditional pardon allows him to serve his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, contingent upon a RM50 million fine.

This development was approved by the Pardons Board's meeting for the Federal Territories, as stated by the Legal Affairs Division.

KAJANG, Sept 19 — The status of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case involving Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak remains unchanged following his conditional pardon, said Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman.

He said each case must be handled separately based on the issues and investigations involved.

“For our part, cases that are still pending will continue as usual. The status quo remains,” he told a press conference here today.

He said this when asked whether the conditional pardon granted to the former prime minister would have any impact on the ongoing 1MDB case and appeal.

Abd Halim said one case could not simply be equated with another, as each investigation involved different allegations and issues.

“We need to understand that each case is different. They cannot be handled as if they were the same case, as each investigation is focused on what is being investigated, whether it concerns specific issues raised or complaints received,” he said.

His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has consented to grant Najib a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.
