Najib’s conditional pardon has not strained unity government, says DPM Zahid

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi affirmed that the unity government's coalition maintains strong relations despite the Pardons Board's decision regarding former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The decision allows Najib to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest, following a conditional pardon by Malaysia's King.

Ahmad Zahid emphasized that all Cabinet decisions are made collectively and professionally within the legal bounds of the Federal Constitution.

He reiterated that challenging the King's decision would contradict constitutional provisions, stressing the coalition's commitment to uphold the law.

JAKARTA, Sept 19 — Relations among the parties that make up the unity government remain good following the Pardons Board’s decision involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president, said that in managing government affairs, all parties continue to act professionally, with Cabinet decisions being made collectively.

“The relationship remains good and, although we are politicians, when it comes to managing government affairs, we act professionally, and there is no problem because all decisions by the Cabinet are made collectively.

“In terms of personal relations, Alhamdulillah, they remain good so far. As members of the unity government, we will continue to uphold the principles of discipline as long as we are in the unity government,” he told a media conference today.

Yesterday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, granted former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak a conditional pardon, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to the payment of a RM50 million fine.

The Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister’s Department said the order was decided at the 64th Meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya held at Istana Negara.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, said the decision of the Pardons Board regarding Najib, which received the consent of His Majesty, was bound by provisions of the Federal Constitution.

“What was decided by the Pardons Board, and received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, is a decision bound by several clauses in the Malaysian Constitution, and His Majesty would certainly have taken into consideration that legal provisions serve as the basis for the pardon decision.

“So, if any party disputes the King’s decision, it means that it is not in line with the provisions enshrined in the Constitution. Umno and BN themselves are of the view that the law must be obeyed. That position is clear, as reflected in statements I made previously,” he added. — Bernama

副首相拿督斯里艾哈迈德扎希德哈米迪确认，尽管赦免委员会对前首相拿督斯里纳吉做出了决定，但联合政府的联盟仍保持着牢固的关系。

根据马来西亚国王的有条件赦免，该决定允许纳吉布在家中服完剩余刑期。

艾哈迈德·扎希德强调，内阁的所有决定都是在联邦宪法的法律框架内，以集体和专业的方式做出的。

他重申，挑战国王的决定将违反宪法规定，并强调联合政府致力于维护法律。

巫统主席艾哈迈德·扎希德表示，在处理政府事务时，各方继续保持专业精神，内阁决策由各方集体做出。

“双方关系依然良好，虽然我们是政治家，但在处理政府事务时，我们表现得非常专业，而且由于内阁的所有决定都是集体做出的，所以不存在任何问题。”

“就私人关系而言，感谢真主，目前为止一切都很好。作为联合政府成员，只要我们还在联合政府中，我们就会继续坚持纪律原则，”他今天在新闻发布会上说。

昨天，马来西亚最高元首苏丹易卜拉欣陛下给予前首相拿督斯里纳吉有条件赦免，允许他居家监禁至2028年8月23日，但需缴纳5000万令吉的罚款。

首相署法律事务司（BHEUU）表示，该命令是在吉隆坡、纳闽和布城联邦直辖区赦免委员会第64次会议上于国家皇宫举行的会议上决定的。

国阵主席艾哈迈德·扎希德表示，赦免委员会对纳吉布作出的决定得到了国王陛下的同意，并受联邦宪法条款的约束。

“赦免委员会所作出的决定，并得到了最高元首的同意，这一决定受到马来西亚宪法若干条款的约束，陛下肯定会考虑到法律条文是赦免决定的依据。”

“因此，如果任何一方对国王的决定提出异议，那就意味着该决定不符合宪法规定。巫统和国阵本身都认为必须遵守法律。这一点立场很明确，正如我之前发表的声明中所体现的那样。”他补充道。——马新社
