Prisons Dept says still waiting for official notice before Najib’s house arrest can start

Datuk Seri Najib Razak's transition from prison to house arrest awaits formal confirmation from the Malaysian Prisons Department, which is pending official written notification of a conditional pardon.

Granted by the Federal Territories Pardons Board, this pardon allows Najib to serve his remaining SRC International sentence under house arrest until August 2028, contingent upon conditions including a RM50 million fine.

The Prisons Department has committed to executing any received instructions in compliance with legal and procedural standards while urging caution against speculative discussions on the matter.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20 — Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s move from prison to house arrest has yet to get the formal green light from the Malaysian Prisons Department, which says it is still waiting for official written notification of the conditional pardon granted to the former prime minister.

The Federal Territories Pardons Board granted Najib a conditional pardon on Friday, allowing him to serve the remainder of his SRC International sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to conditions including payment of a RM50 million fine.

“In this regard, in line with the statement by Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution smail, Minister of Home Affairs on September 19, 2026, the Home Ministry and Malaysian Prisons Department are still awaiting official written notification regarding the decision before any further action to implement the decision can be determined.

“Any notification and official documents relating to the Pardons Board’s decision will be conveyed through the appropriate official channels before being submitted to the Malaysian Prisons Department for further action,” the department said in a statement today.

The department said it was ready to carry out any official instructions received from the relevant authorities in accordance with the law, prison regulations and procedures currently in force.

It also said any decision or instruction received would be carried out in an orderly, professional and transparent manner.

The department urged all parties to refer to official sources and refrain from speculating about how the decision would be implemented.

Najib, who has been held at Kajang Prison since August 2022, is serving a six-year sentence after the Federal Territory Pardons Board in 2024 reduced his original 12-year jail term and RM210 million fine for the SRC International case to six years and RM50 million.

The conditional royal pardon allows him to serve the remainder of that sentence under house arrest, but the RM50 million fine remains among the conditions attached to the decision.

“任何与赦免委员会决定有关的通知和官方文件，都将通过适当的官方渠道传达，然后再提交给马来西亚监狱部门采取进一步行动，”该部门今天在一份声明中表示。

该部门表示，已做好准备，将按照现行法律、监狱规章和程序，执行有关当局的任何正式指示。

声明还表示，收到的任何决定或指示都将以有序、专业和透明的方式执行。

该部门敦促各方参考官方消息来源，不要对该决定将如何执行进行猜测。

纳吉自 2022 年 8 月起被关押在加影监狱，目前正在服刑六年。此前，联邦直辖区赦免委员会于 2024 年将他因 SRC 国际案而被判处的 12 年监禁和 2.1 亿令吉罚款减至 6 年监禁和 5000 万令吉。

有条件的皇家赦免允许他居家监禁服完剩余刑期，但5000万令吉的罚款仍然是该决定的附加条件之一。

教育部将重新审视2006年补习中心所有权规定，提案将于下周提交内阁审议。

砂拉越副首相表示，砂拉越原则上同意拨款15亿令吉用于诗巫经济特区。

纳吉告诉支持者，任何人都不应该感到有义务帮助支付5000万令吉的罚款，与此同时，巫统团结基金已达到100万令吉。
