3 new bus routes for Tengah, Woodlands; interim shuttles for delayed Jurong Region Line to launch from mid-2027

SINGAPORE: Three new bus routes serving northern and western Singapore will be launched soon, including two services connecting Tengah to Choa Chu Kang and to Bukit Gombak.

This comes as the Tengah population has more than doubled to 28,000 residents over the past year, with more people still moving in every day, said Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow on Sunday (Sep 20).

“In another two more years, Tengah will have 57,000 residents,” he said at a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration at Tengah Community Club, where he gave updates on the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) Bus Connectivity Enhancement Programme.

The government’s push to boost connectivity in Tengah, Singapore’s newest Housing and Development Board town, has made headlines in recent years, with Prime Minister Lawrence Wong once recalling a resident who described the area as the “Punggol of the West” amid its rapid development.

In his speech, Mr Siow said transport is a “key priority” for the new town, noting that there were only four bus services operating in Tengah last May. Today, there are 11 bus services, he said.

Some services only run during the peak hours for now because there are limited buses and drivers, he said.

“I wanted to prioritise getting more connections first, connect to more places first, instead of putting all the buses into one single service,” he said, adding that if there is demand, the services can slowly be expanded to off-peak hours.

As for the delayed Jurong Region Line (JRL), Mr Siow said an interim shuttle bus service, which will broadly follow the route of the JRL, will be introduced from the second half of 2027.

“Commuters will begin to enjoy the JRL’s connectivity on the original timeline – first by bus, and later by train when the JRL is up and running,” he said.

He previously shared that the JRL’s opening would be pushed back by around six months because of construction delays and testing, and that the line will open in the middle of 2028.

TENGAH, WOODLANDS BUS SERVICES

LTA said in a press release on Sunday that the new bus services 873 and 874, which connect to Tengah, will begin on Oct 25.

The former will link Tengah to Bukit Gombak, Hillview and Hume MRT stations, while the latter will link Tengah to Choa Chu Kang.

Mr Siow, who is a member of parliament for Chua Chu Kang GRC, said many residents have been asking for a bus service like 874.

“I understand, because many of the residents here have moved from Choa Chu Kang and your parents are still in Choa Chu Kang, family still there, some of your children also go to school in Choa Chu Kang,” he said.

Currently, commuters need to change buses two or three times to get to Choa Chu Kang.

“With 874, there will be just one bus,” he said, adding that it will pass through the Choa Chu Kang town centre and by Concord Primary School, Bukit Panjang Government High, Chua Chu Kang Primary, Sunshine Place and Brickland.

In Woodlands, new service 968 will begin at the temporary bus interchange and bring commuters to Woodlands North, Woodlands South and Admiralty MRT stations.

Mr Siow, who is also Second Minister for Finance, said 968 will support the opening of the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link, which is set to open in January 2027.

ENHANCEMENTS TO EXISTING SERVICES

Apart from the new bus routes serving northern and western Singapore, Mr Siow said more trips will also be added to city direct service 674 and service 861.

Service 674 connects Tengah to the Central Business District, while 861 links Sembawang and Yishun.

“I know these are very popular services that residents here take, and they are a bit crowded in the mornings, so we will add more buses and trips so you will have more frequent and less crowded rides,” said Mr Siow.

Over in Punggol, service 381 has been extended from Punggol East to Punggol Coast from Sep 13, LTA said.

LTA said more details on 674, 861, 968 and the Jurong Region Line buses will be shared closer to their respective implementation dates.

他说，由于公交车和司机数量有限，目前部分线路只在高峰时段运营。

“我希望优先增加线路连接，连接更多地方，而不是把所有公交车都集中到一个服务中，”他说，并补充说，如果有需求，可以逐步将服务扩展到非高峰时段。

至于延期的裕廊区域线（JRL），萧先生表示，从2027年下半年开始，将推出一项临时接驳巴士服务，大致沿用裕廊区域线的路线。

他说：“通勤者将按照原计划开始享受 JRL 的交通便利——首先是乘坐公共汽车，然后等 JRL 投入运营后乘坐火车。”

他此前曾表示，由于建设延误和测试，JRL 的开通时间将推迟约 6 个月，该线路将于 2028 年年中开通。

登加、兀兰 巴士服务

陆路交通管理局周日在一份新闻稿中表示，连接登加的新巴士服务 873 和 874 将于 10 月 25 日开始运营。

前者将连接登加 (Tengah) 至武吉甘柏 (Bukit Gombak)、山景 (Hillview) 和休姆 (Hume) 地铁站，而后者将连接登加 (Tengah) 至蔡厝港 (Choa Chu Kang)。

蔡厝港集选区国会议员萧先生表示，许多居民一直要求开通类似 874 路的巴士服务。

“我明白，因为这里很多居民都是从蔡厝港搬过来的，而你的父母还在蔡厝港，家人也还在那里，你的一些孩子也在蔡厝港上学，”他说。

目前，通勤者需要换乘两到三次公交车才能到达蔡厝港。

“874路公交车只有一辆，”他说，并补充说，它将途经蔡厝港镇中心，以及康科德小学、武吉班让政府中学、蔡厝港小学、阳光广场和砖厂。

在兀兰，新的968路公交车将从临时巴士转换站出发，将乘客送往兀兰北站、兀兰南站和海军部地铁站。

萧先生同时也是财政部第二部长，他表示，968 将支持柔佛新山-新加坡快速交通系统连接线的开通，该连接线预计将于 2027 年 1 月开通。

对现有服务的改进

除了服务于新加坡北部和西部的新巴士路线外，萧先生表示，还将增加直达市区的 674 路和 861 路巴士的班次。

674路公交车连接登加和中央商务区，而861路公交车连接三巴旺和义顺。

“我知道这些服务很受当地居民欢迎，而且早上会比较拥挤，所以我们将增加巴士班次，让大家乘坐更频繁、更不拥挤的巴士，”萧先生说。

陆路交通管理局表示，榜鹅地区的381路公交车已于9月13日起从榜鹅东站延长至榜鹅海岸站。
