A 59-year-old silat instructor was sentenced to five months and five weeks' jail on Tuesday (Sept 22) after pleading guilty to molesting a 14-year-old student and engaging in sexual communication with a minor.
The man kissed the girl on the forehead twice and on the cheek once after pulling her towards him during a traditional greeting known as a "salam", reported The Straits Times.
The victim started attending silat lessons in November 2024, with the man as her instructor.
At the end of a lesson sometime between November and December 2024, the man asked the girl to perform a "salam".
As she held his hand and brought it towards her forehead as part of the greeting, he held onto her hand and drew her closer.
He then embraced the girl and kissed her forehead over her hijab, leaving her feeling uncomfortable.
He repeated the act between January and February 2025.
On a separate occasion between January and March 2025, he kissed her cheek.
The man also exchanged messages with the girl through Telegram in February 2025, using the platform's disappearing messages feature.
According to court documents cited by The Straits Times, he asked the girl if she wanted to know what men were like and told her she could ask him about "sex or anything".
The girl found the messages inappropriate coming from her teacher, and took screenshots of the conversation.
Her mother later discovered the screenshots while looking through her daughter's phone and subsequently alerted the police.
The man was arrested in March 2026.
The prosecution said the girl was left traumatised by the man's actions.
Two other molestation charges were taken into consideration during sentencing.
The man was granted $20,000 bail on Tuesday and is expected to begin serving his sentence on Oct 12.

在 2025 年 1 月至 3 月期间的另一次场合中，他亲吻了她的脸颊。
2025年2月，该男子还通过 Telegram 与该女孩互发信息，使用了该平台的阅后即焚功能。
据《海峡时报》援引的法庭文件显示，他问这名女孩是否想知道男人是什么样的人，并告诉她可以问他关于“性或任何事情”的问题。
女孩觉得老师发来的信息不合适，于是截屏保存了对话内容。
她的母亲后来在查看女儿的手机时发现了这些截图，随后报警。
该男子于2026年3月被捕。
检方称，该男子的行为给女孩造成了精神创伤。
量刑时还考虑了另外两项性骚扰指控。
该男子周二获准以 2 万美元保释，预计将于 10 月 12 日开始服刑。
