Anwar asks Loke to review decision to quit Cabinet after Najib’s conditional pardon

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim urged Transport Minister Anthony Loke to reconsider resigning from the Cabinet after Najib Razak's conditional pardon.

Anwar emphasised that DAP should resist pressure from groups aiming to destabilise the unity government.

He stated that the final decision on pardons is with the King, refuting claims of secret negotiations between his administration and Umno.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Transport Minister Anthony Loke to rethink his plan to step down from the Cabinet following the Pardons Board’s decision to grant former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak a conditional pardon.

In a New Straits Times report, Anwar said DAP should not give in to political pressure from groups seeking instability in the unity government.

“Some people ask, why Anthony Loke? Why doesn’t the whole of DAP leave? Whose suggestion is that? Why should he leave? He did nothing wrong,” he said while travelling by high‑speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou.

He said Loke had not proposed the pardon and had “tried his best to oppose it.”

“So I think DAP should not bow to pressure from those with vested interests because they want the government to be unstable,” he added.

Anwar said he would meet Loke soon to hear his explanation and would ask him to withdraw his decision to resign.

He acknowledged that DAP and Pakatan Harapan had long taken a firm stance against kleptocracy and corruption, making the Pardons Board’s decision difficult for them to defend.

“I gave him space and did not want to rush things because I respect his decision. He is not opposing my decision or the Madani government or cooperation within the unity government,” he said.

“He feels it is difficult to defend the Pardons Board’s decision when his party, and even Pakatan Harapan, has held a very firm position on this matter from the beginning.”

Anwar said the government’s views, including the position taken by Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar during the Pardons Board meeting, had been conveyed to His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia.

He reminded all parties that executive power has constitutional limits and that the final decision on pardons rests with the King.

Anwar criticised politicians who alleged there was a compromise or secret pact between him and Umno leaders over the pardon.

He said his administration’s priority was to maintain political stability, uphold good relations with the Malay Rulers and steer the country’s economic direction responsibly.

He also urged Malaysians of all backgrounds to uphold loyalty to the nation through the term “Wangyue,” which he said symbolises commitment to the country.

据《新海峡时报》报道，安华表示，民主行动党不应屈服于那些企图破坏联合政府稳定的团体的政治压力。

“有人问，为什么是陆兆福？为什么整个民主行动党不退出？这是谁的提议？他为什么要退出？他又没做错什么。”他在乘坐高铁从上海前往杭州的途中说道。

他说，陆兆福并没有提出赦免请求，而且“竭尽全力反对”。

“所以我认为民主行动党不应该屈服于那些既得利益者的压力，因为他们希望政府不稳定，”他补充道。

安华表示，他将尽快与陆兆福会面，听取他的解释，并要求他撤回辞职决定。

他承认，民主行动党和希望联盟长期以来对盗贼统治和腐败采取了坚决的立场，这使得赦免委员会的决定对他们来说难以辩护。

他说：“我给了他足够的空间，不想操之过急，因为我尊重他的决定。他既不反对我的决定，也不反对马达尼政府，更不反对联合政府内部的合作。​​”

“他觉得很难为赦免委员会的决定辩护，因为他的政党，甚至希望联盟，从一开始就对此事持非常坚定的立场。”

安华表示，政府的意见，包括总检察长丹斯里莫哈末·杜苏基·莫克塔尔在赦免委员会会议上所持的立场，已经传达给了马来西亚最高元首苏丹易卜拉欣陛下。

他提醒各方，行政权力受到宪法限制，赦免的最终决定权在于国王。

安华批评了那些声称他与巫统领导人之间就赦免事宜存在妥协或秘密协议的政客。

他表示，本届政府的首要任务是维护政治稳定，与马来统治者保持良好关系，并负责任地引导国家经济发展方向。

他还敦促所有背景的马来西亚人通过“王岳”一词来维护对国家的忠诚，他说“王岳”象征着对国家的忠诚。
