Anwar: Negeri Sembilan MB and executive council’s bid to remove ruler was ‘rude and uncivilised’

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim condemned the attempt to remove Tuanku Muhriz by the Negeri Sembilan menteri besar and executive council, labelling it rude and uncivilised.

Anwar stressed that only the Undang Luak can decide on the Ruler's position, but decisions must adhere to established procedures, and the federal government has a duty to uphold institutions.

Despite the federal government's non-interference stance, Anwar stated conflicting claims among the Undang must be settled following proper protocols.

HANGZHOU, Sept 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim criticised the Negeri Sembilan menteri besar and state executive council for attempting to remove Yang di‑Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, calling the move rude and uncivilised.

He said no state‑level authority has the mandate to question or alter the position of the Ruler, according to Berita Harian .

“Menteri Besar and the executive council who made this decision — this is a rude step, uncivilised, and I strongly object,” he said while travelling by high‑speed train from Shanghai to Hangzhou.

Anwar said the crisis involving state administration and customary authority in Negeri Sembilan had become increasingly complex.

He noted that Datuk Ismail Lasim previously announced that the proclamation to remove Tuanku Muhriz had been unanimously endorsed by the state executive council.

Anwar stressed that the federal government is not interfering in the matter and said the issue of dethroning a Ruler is not straightforward.

He said his recent audience with Tuanku Muhriz was held because the court had affirmed His Majesty as the lawful Yang di‑Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan.

He said the Undang Luak have the authority to decide on the position of the Ruler, but their decisions are not absolute and must follow established procedures.

“I respect the Undang, and I know some of them well, but they must understand that safeguarding national institutions and security is the responsibility of the federal government,” he said.

“Do not say we cannot be involved; this is not interference. The Undang can make decisions, but those decisions are not absolute and must follow the rules,” he added.

Anwar said conflicting claims among the Undang must be resolved before any decision can be considered valid.

He said any decision made by the properly appointed Undang following the correct process would fall outside the jurisdiction of the federal government.

安华强调联邦政府不会干预此事，并表示废黜统治者的问题并不简单。

他说，他最近会见端姑慕力兹是因为法庭确认陛下为森美兰州合法国家元首。

他说，Undang Luak 有权决定统治者的位置，但他们的决定并非绝对，必须遵循既定程序。

“我尊重这些民族团结党人，而且我跟他们中的一些人也很熟，但他们必须明白，维护国家机构和安全是联邦政府的责任，”他说。

“不要说我们不能参与；这不是干涉。人民法院可以做出决定，但这些决定并非绝对，必须遵守规则，”他补充道。

安华表示，在任何决定被视为有效之前，必须先解决乌当各派之间的相互矛盾的说法。

他表示，任何由正式任命的联邦委员会按照正确程序做出的决定，都将超出联邦政府的管辖范围。
