Sarawak chokes as Serian API hits 217, Kuching just under ‘Very Unhealthy’ band

Air quality in Sarawak has significantly deteriorated, with Serian district reporting a "Very Unhealthy" Air Pollutant Index (API) of 217.

This severe pollution led to the closure of all 108 schools in Serian, transitioning to home-based learning.

Additional regions like Kuching and Samarahan also witnessed high pollution levels, indicating a widespread haze issue across the state.

Sarawak accounted for most of the affected locations, while Bukit Rambai in Melaka was the only affected area from Peninsular Malaysia.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 25 — Air quality remains poor in Sarawak today, with Serian district recording an Air Pollutant Index (API) reading of 217 as of 9am, according to the Department of Environment (DoE).

The figure places Serian firmly in the "Very Unhealthy" band, which begins at 201, making it the worst-affected location in the country this morning.

Yesterday, the Sarawak Education Department that all 108 schools in the Serian district temporarily after the API there exceeded 201 the previous day, with home-based teaching and learning to be carried out throughout the closure period.

Kuching was the next worst-hit location, with a reading of 195, just short of the Very Unhealthy threshold. Samarahan followed at 189, while Bintulu registered 170 and Sri Aman 168.

Sarawak remained overwhelmingly the worst-affected region, accounting for nine of the ten stations in the Unhealthy-or-above bracket. Samalaju recorded 162, Sibu and Sarikei were tied at 158, Mukah stood at 148, and Miri, the mildest of the state's affected areas, registered 126.

The spread of high readings across the state's southern, central and northern divisions points to a broad and worsening haze event, with Serian now the epicentre serious enough to disrupt schooling.

Outside Sarawak, only one station featured on the list. Bukit Rambai in Melaka recorded 112, the sole entry from Peninsular Malaysia and the lowest reading among the ten affected areas.

该州南部、中部和北部地区高雾霾读数的蔓延表明，雾霾事件范围广泛且不断恶化，而塞里安现在已成为雾霾的中心，其严重程度足以扰乱学校的正常教学。
