Thailand’s 16-year-old rock sensation Nene Royal has stormed to victory on America’s Got Talent, becoming the first Thai contestant reported to win the US show. The Phuket guitarist captured America’s vote after a blistering “Seven Nation Army” final, taking the US$1 million prize and triggering celebrations back home. Her extraordinary final days also saw her perform with Linkin Park and jam with The Warning. Behind the breakthrough lies a remarkable journey from Phuket night markets to American prime-time television, driven by years of practice, family support and an uncompromising rock sound. Now, with a debut EP being prepared, attention is turning to what Nene does next.

Thailand has a new international rock star after 16-year-old Nene Royal stormed to victory on America’s Got Talent on Wednesday night. The Phuket singer and guitarist won Season 21 after a dramatic two-hour results show in California. Hours earlier, she had performed alongside Linkin Park before a huge American television audience. Then America’s vote put her on top.

Host Terry Crews steadily cut the ten finalists down as tension mounted inside the studio. Eventually, Nene stood in the final two beside 22-year-old magician Geno Ploeger. Crews then announced that American viewers had given the Thai teenager the most votes. Golden confetti fell as an emotional Nene dropped to the floor before thanking those who supported her.

Nene, whose real name is Rattikarn “Praew” Amloy, became the first Thai contestant reported to win AGT. Ploeger finished second, while magic group Hundred Fingers took third place. Royal Lasers finished fourth and aerialist Veronika Goroshkova fifth.

Back in Thailand, the drama unfolded on Thursday morning as broadcasters, supporters and her school followed events from California. At about 9.47 am Thailand time, reports confirmed that Nene had reached the Top Five. The field then narrowed further as the live results continued. Shortly afterwards, the final announcement sent her name racing across Thai social media.

The advertised prize is US$1 million, although the payment terms carry an important qualification. The full amount can be paid as an annuity over 40 years. Alternatively, the winner can select the present cash value of that annuity. Thai reports put that immediate amount considerably below US$1 million before applicable taxes.

Yet Nene’s extraordinary final 48 hours produced far more than the competition result. On Wednesday night, Linkin Park appeared during the finale programme. Crucially, the Thai teenager joined them for “The Emptiness Machine”.

Nene took the opening verse before Linkin Park vocalist Emily Armstrong joined the performance. Later, the pair sang together while Nene stood between Armstrong and Mike Shinoda. She also played guitar during the number. For a 16-year-old guitarist from Phuket, the setting could hardly have been bigger.

Afterwards, Shinoda described Nene as “incredible, incredible”. Armstrong also backed the teenager before the result. “Good luck, we’re all rooting for you for sure,” she said. Notably, the encounter followed Nene’s earlier public hope that she might somehow play with the band.

Beforehand, footage had emerged showing Nene preparing for the Linkin Park appearance. Her Phuket group OZONE quickly highlighted the development. The band billed it as “Linkin Park feat. Nene Royal AGT 2026 Grand Final Result Show.”

However, the American vote had already closed on Nene’s competitive performance from the previous night. For that crucial appearance, she walked into Pasadena Civic Auditorium carrying her vintage Ibanez MC300. Her final song was The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army”.

Nene did not simply reproduce one of modern rock’s most recognisable songs. Instead, she pulled the arrangement apart and rebuilt it around a much heavier sound. The opening was haunting and restrained. From there, the performance suddenly accelerated.

Then her guitar took over. Nene delivered prominent solos, hard-edged passages and two-handed tapping. Meanwhile, her vocals remained central to the arrangement. She later pulled the song back again for a quieter ending.

The reaction inside Pasadena was immediate. Guest judge KSI was watching Nene perform for the first time. “This is the first time I’ve ever seen and heard you. And I am a fan,” he said. He added: “You should be so proud, that was insane.”

Mel B already knew what the Thai guitarist could deliver. Notably, she had used her Live Golden Buzzer during Nene’s quarter-final appearance. That followed Nene’s rendition of Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” and sent her directly into the final.

After “Seven Nation Army”, Mel B stressed that the commanding guitarist onstage was still only 16. Then came the joke. “If you don’t win this, I’m gonna sell Howie’s new house,” she said.

Sofía Vergara delivered another emphatic verdict. “The world is going crazy because there is nothing like you right now,” she said. “You’re unique. And we can’t get enough of you.”

Meanwhile, Howie Mandel left the judges’ area and walked towards Nene’s father. He embraced him while the teenager remained onstage. Later, Mandel turned directly towards American viewers. “You should win. Give her the million, America. Give her the million,” he said.

Nene had opened her AGT campaign with The Cranberries’ “Zombie”. Judges Simon Cowell, Mel B, Sofía Vergara and Mandel all voted to send her forward. Next came Muse’s “Hysteria” during the Judges’ Callbacks.

There, Nene combined vocals with intricate and percussive guitar techniques. Subsequently, she secured a place among the 44 contestants selected for the live rounds. Then “Black Hole Sun” produced Mel B’s Golden Buzzer and a direct route into the grand final.

Finally came “Seven Nation Army”. Across those four performances, Nene stayed firmly inside rock music. Instead, the guitar became increasingly prominent as the competition advanced. Likewise, her arrangements became harder and more ambitious.

By Pasadena, the sound had also acquired a carefully constructed visual identity. Nene walked onto the final stage dressed in brilliant red. Her costume carried its own name: “ROCK STRONG — RED COMMANDER”.

The concept began with Nene’s mother. She wanted her daughter to project strength, confidence and elegance without losing her rock energy. P’Ice subsequently developed those ideas into the visual concept. Dr Atchima Suwanchinda then turned that concept into the finished outfit.

At its heart was something unmistakably Thai. The costume incorporated handwoven Ban Krua silk from central Bangkok. However, the designers did not turn it into conventional Thai national dress. Instead, they pushed the material into an aggressive contemporary rock look.

The vivid red outfit featured a fitted high neck and heavily structured shoulders. Leather belts gave the costume a harder edge, while metal studs and chains added detail. Meanwhile, waist draping and a front slit allowed freer movement.

Dr. Martens boots completed the look. The silk itself contained metallic-thread detailing on a plain ground. It came from the historic Ban Krua community beside Khlong Saen Saep. The Bangkok community has deep links with its Cham Muslim population and traditional silk weaving.

Consequently, the Thai-rock presentation was deliberate. Her creative team combined Thai craftsmanship with rock fashion rather than conventional national costume. Bangkok silk sat alongside leather, metal, chains, boots and Nene’s electric guitar.

Moreover, the concept had appeared earlier during her AGT campaign. For “Black Hole Sun”, Nene incorporated Yok Bloe woven fabric from southern Thailand. Subsequently, the Thai government highlighted the textile while congratulating her. Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul also congratulated Nene following her Golden Buzzer success.

On another front, a major rock encounter arrived before Linkin Park. AGT arranged for Nene to meet Mexican all-female rock trio The Warning. The band consists of sisters Daniela, Paulina and Alejandra Villarreal.

As part of the encounter, Nene joined them for “Kerosene”. Nene played guitar alongside Daniela, while Paulina handled drums and Alejandra played bass. AGT later released extended footage after parts appeared in Nene’s introductory material.

The appearance initially caused confusion around “Seven Nation Army”. Some viewers believed Paulina Villarreal had also played drums during Nene’s competitive final. She had not. Instead, AGT musician Ashlee Nicole Nino played drums during that performance.

Nino later described it as one of her favourites during six seasons working on AGT. Separately, Nene’s session with The Warning remained a genuine collaboration. Within days, she would also be performing alongside Linkin Park.

In parallel, events were moving rapidly among Thai supporters in California. Nene returned to Los Angeles on September 15 with her parents, younger brother and manager. More than 200 Thai community members reportedly greeted her at Los Angeles International Airport.

Members of OZONE also travelled from Phuket to support her during the final. Their connection stretched back well before American television discovered Nene. She had already performed with the local band before audiences and tourists across Phuket.

Indeed, days before leaving for America, Nene played a scheduled Phuket concert with OZONE at Naka Night Market. The September 12 show drew a large local crowd and online audience. Before taking the stage, Nene said she was “100% confident” about the AGT final.

Her preparation was intensive. Nene said she practised every day after school, generally from 5 pm until 9 pm or 9.30 pm. Therefore, she was balancing schoolwork with four hours or more of daily final preparations.

Her family had not always expected music to become the teenager’s career. Initially, her parents wanted her to pursue business studies. However, they changed their position after seeing her perform live. From there, they supported her musical ambitions.

Nene had started playing guitar at seven. Years of practice then led into live performances around Phuket. By the time AGT arrived, she was already an experienced live singer and guitarist.

Meanwhile, her school turned the American final into a major event. Administrators, teachers, parents and students gathered at Kajonkiet International School Phuket in Kathu. The gathering began at 7.15 am as screens carried the action from California.

Cheers broke out as Nene appeared on the Pasadena stage. The school audience followed “Seven Nation Army” almost note by note. Elsewhere, Thai viewers followed television coverage, online clips and social media updates.

Yet Thailand itself could not simply vote Nene to the title. Voting was restricted to eligible viewers in the 50 US states and Puerto Rico. Furthermore, voters had to meet the programme’s age requirement.

Therefore, Nene needed American voters rather than her rapidly expanding domestic following to decide the result. Thai supporters could share performances and build attention. Eligible Thai residents in the United States could also participate. Votes cast from Thailand itself could not decide the contest.

Shortly before the result, Nene posted a brief message. “Dreams can come true if our hearts fight,” she wrote.

Nene turns towards original music with a debut EP planned after her breakthrough American victory

Attention now turns to what follows. As of Thursday morning, no international recording contract had been announced. Likewise, there was no confirmed global management agreement or international tour.

Her official website, however, describes Nene as a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. It lists modern rock, alternative pop and melodic metal among her influences. It also says she is preparing original material, including a debut EP.

That provides the next concrete musical development after an AGT run dominated by major rock covers. However, no release date had been announced for the EP. Nor had a record label been publicly identified.

Now the focus turns to her own music.
