The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) on Thursday (Sept 24) participated in a Five-Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) hosted by the Malaysian Armed Forces in Kuantan, Pahang.
In a news release on Thursday evening, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said the exercise builds the trust and confidence needed to strengthen interoperability and enhance the countries' ability to conduct combined operations.
Codenamed Exercise Suman Warrior, and now in its 34th edition, this year's land-focused exercise was held from Sept 14 to 24 at the Joint Warfare Centre.
MINDEF said about 150 participants from FPDA member countries — Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK — took part in a brigade command post exercise.
"The exercise focused on conventional operations and provided opportunities for participants to exercise command decision-making and staff procedures within a combined operations mission context."
Singapore's 18-man delegation was led by Senior Lieutenant Colonel (NS) Lim Kim Soon, who is the 3rd Singapore Infantry Brigade's chief-of-staff.
"The SAF's participation in XSW reflects our continued commitment to working closely with our partners to promote regional cooperation and professional exchange," he said.
FPDA is a collective defence agreement established in 1971 after British forces withdrew from the 'East of Suez', and is intended to safeguard the defence of Singapore and Malaysia.
It is characterised by regular exercises to ensure inter-operability, while also looking at ways to do more to counter emerging security threats.
Other FPDA exercises which the SAF participates in includes Exercise Bersama Lima and Exercise Bersama Shield.
Such exercises, MINDEF said, allows the SAF to demonstrate its continued commitment to contributing constructively to the regional security architecture.

此次演习代号为“苏曼勇士”，今年已是第 34 届，以陆地为重点的演习于 9 月 14 日至 24 日在联合作战中心举行。
国防部表示，来自FPDA成员国（澳大利亚、马来西亚、新西兰、新加坡和英国）的约150名参与者参加了旅级指挥所演习。
“此次演习侧重于常规作战，并为参演人员提供了在联合作战任务环境下演练指挥决策和参谋程序的机会。”
新加坡18人代表团由新加坡第3步兵旅参谋长林金顺中校（国民服役）率领。
“新加坡武装部队参加XSW体现了我们持续致力于与合作伙伴紧密合作，促进区域合作和专业交流的承诺，”他说。
《新加坡和马来西亚共同防御条约》（FPDA）是1971年英国军队撤出“苏伊士运河以东”后建立的一项集体防御协议，旨在保障新加坡和马来西亚的国防。
它的特点是定期进行演习以确保互操作性，同时还寻求更多方法来应对新出现的安全威胁。
新加坡武装部队参与的其他 FPDA 演习包括“Bersama Lima”演习和“Bersama Shield”演习。
新加坡国防部表示，此类演习可以让新加坡武装部队展现其持续致力于为区域安全架构做出建设性贡献的承诺。
