Thailand’s exports rose 24.3% from a year earlier in August to US$34.62 billion, extending their expansion to a 26th consecutive month as overseas investment in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure boosted demand for electronic products.
The figures were released by the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), under Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce, in its report on the country’s international trade performance in August 2026.
Imports increased 25.1% to US$37.10 billion, resulting in a trade deficit of US$2.48 billion. Excluding oil-related products, gold and military goods, exports grew 19.5%.
During the first eight months of 2026, exports increased 18.9% to US$266.15 billion, while imports surged 36.1% to US$303.99 billion. Thailand recorded a cumulative trade deficit of US$37.84 billion.
Industrial-product exports climbed 27.1% in August, recording their 29th consecutive month of year-on-year growth. Exports in the category rose 22.7% during the first eight months.
Among the strongest performers were video-recording equipment and components, up 1,155.7%; telephones and components, up 151.2%; printed circuits, up 126.8%; electrical transformers and parts, up 55.6%; and computers and components, up 42.1%.
Automobile and parts exports fell 7.1%, while motorcycles and related parts declined 12.9%.
Combined exports of agricultural and agro-industrial products returned to growth after four months of contraction, rising 1.4% in August.
Agricultural exports increased 4.2%, supported by a rebound in fruit shipments to China. Exports of fresh, chilled, frozen and dried fruit rose 24%, led by fresh durians and mangosteens from southern Thailand.
Rubber exports gained 23.2%, fresh, chilled and frozen shrimp rose 18.8%, and processed chicken increased 10.5%.
Agro-industrial exports remained weak, falling 1.9% for a fifth consecutive monthly decline. Animal and vegetable oils and fats dropped 43.9%, while wheat products and other food preparations fell 19.1%.
Exports to Thailand’s major markets rose 25.4%. Shipments to the United States surged 48.7%, followed by the European Union at 23.1%, Japan at 19.6% and China at 15.5%.
Among secondary markets, exports to Australia jumped 81%. Shipments declined in South Asia, the United Kingdom, Africa and the Middle East.
The TPSO expects exports to continue expanding during the remainder of 2026, supported by steady demand for AI-related electronics and greater clarity over U.S. trade policy.
Natiya Suchinda, TPSO deputy director-general, said the Ministry of Commerce had maintained its full-year export-growth forecast of 5% to 11%, with a midpoint of 8%. The forecast is expected to be reviewed again in November.
However, Natiya said recent strong export performance had raised the possibility of full-year growth reaching 15%, equivalent to approximately US$391.27 billion. Achieving that level would require average monthly exports of at least US$31 billion during the final four months of the year.
Risks to the outlook include escalating tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, which could disrupt shipping and raise energy and freight costs, as well as uncertainty surrounding U.S. trade measures.
The Ministry of Commerce said it would seek to conclude negotiations on the Thailand–U.S. Agreement on Reciprocal Trade and accelerate free-trade talks to open new markets and strengthen the competitiveness of Thai exporters.
