RM1m haul as GOF intercepts 15,000 coffee seedlings at Tanah Merah roadblock

The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 15,000 robusta coffee seedlings and a lorry, totaling RM1 million in value, at a roadblock in Tanah Merah.

A 27-year-old man was detained for allegedly smuggling the seedlings from Thailand and attempting to deliver them to Johor.

The seedlings were handed over to the Kota Bharu Agriculture Department due to pest concerns, and the case is under investigation for potential violations of the Plant Quarantine Act 1976.

KOTA BHARU, Sept 27 — The General Operations Force (GOF) seized 15,000 robusta coffee seedlings and a lorry with a total value of RM1 million during a roadblock at Lalang Pepuyu, Tanah Merah, last night.

GOF Southeast Brigade commander SAC Ahmad Radzi Hussain said a 27-year-old man who was driving the lorry was detained during the operation at 11.30pm.

“An inspection of the lorry’s cargo compartment uncovered 15,000 robusta coffee seedlings believed to have been smuggled from Thailand.

“The total value of the seizure was estimated at RM1 million, comprising the lorry worth RM250,000 and the coffee seedlings worth RM750,000,” he said in a statement today.

He said preliminary investigation found that the man had collected the seedlings from an illegal jetty in the Lalang Pepuyu area to deliver them to a nursery in Johor for RM300 per delivery.

“All the seedlings were handed over to the Kota Bharu Agriculture Department for further action as they are suspected of containing pests,” he said.

Ahmad Radzi said the seedlings would be inspected before being disposed of, while a compound could be issued if the offence involving pests was confirmed.

The case is being investigated under the Plant Quarantine Act 1976 (Act 167), he added. — Bernama

东南旅指挥官艾哈迈德·拉齐·侯赛因上士表示，在晚上 11 点 30 分的行动中，一名 27 岁的卡车司机被拘留。

“对卡车货舱的检查发现了 15,000 株罗布斯塔咖啡幼苗，据信是从泰国走私过来的。

“此次查获的货物总价值估计为100万令吉，其中包括价值25万令吉的卡车和价值75万令吉的咖啡幼苗，”他今天在一份声明中说。

他说，初步调查发现，该男子从拉朗佩普尤地区的一个非法码头收集了这些幼苗，然后以每批 300 令吉的价格将它们运送到柔佛州的一家苗圃。

他说：“所有幼苗都已移交给哥打巴鲁农业部门作进一步处理，因为它们被怀疑含有害虫。”

艾哈迈德·拉齐表示，这些幼苗在被处置前会接受检查，如果确认存在涉及害虫的违法行为，可能会被处以罚款。
