Dr Zaliha denies attending Myanmar refugee settlement ceremony, says viral claim is false

Former Malaysian minister Datuk Seri Dr. Zaliha Mustafa refuted allegations of her involvement in groundbreaking ceremonies for Myanmar refugee settlements, describing them as baseless and malicious.

She clarified that a circulated photo linking her to such events was taken at a different forum and does not imply any personal connections with the individuals photographed.

Dr. Zaliha outlined her previous initiatives in addressing illegal settlements during her tenure and announced plans to report the defamatory social media posts to the relevant authorities for further action.

She urged against misrepresenting her actions based on out-of-context images.

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 27 — Former minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa denied allegations that she had attended, officiated, or been involved in any groundbreaking ceremonies for new settlements for Myanmar refugees.

She emphasised that the allegations circulating on social media are false and malicious, in addition to linking a photograph of her with an individual to something that never happened.

“I do not personally know the individual in question and do not have any relationship or dealings, whether official or unofficial, with him,” she said in a Facebook post today.

Dr Zaliha explained that based on the review, the circulated photo is believed to have been taken at the Asean Sustainable Urbanisation Forum (ASUF), Asean Governors and Mayors Forum (AGMF), and Meeting of Governors and Mayors of Asean Capitals (MGMAC) 2025 in the capital city on August 12, 2025.

According to her, she was invited to deliver a special address and subsequently attend the Joint Launch Ceremony for the programme, which was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

“The programme is open to the public to register as participants. Therefore, I certainly do not know the identity of every individual who attended.

“A photo with a participant does not mean I know the person, have a relationship with him, invited him personally, or support his views or actions,” she said.

The Sekijang Member of Parliament said she would report the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) regarding the dissemination of the post for review and appropriate action according to the law.

Meanwhile, Dr Zaliha said the allegation that she supported or facilitated the resettlement of new Myanmar refugees was also inconsistent with the record of actions she took while leading the Federal Territories Department.

She said that among the measures implemented was the establishment of the KL Strike Force as an integrated enforcement mechanism to address issues of security and public order, particularly in the capital, including the issue of the influx of foreign nationals and the illegal settlement of Myanmar refugees.

“In fact, the first operation of the KL Strike Force was to raid the illegal settlement of Myanmar refugees in Bandar Baru Sentul. Through KL Strike Force, I emphasised that action should be taken against illegal settlements and structures, unlicensed businesses, and foreign activities without proper authorisation,” she also said.

她表示，已实施的措施之一是成立吉隆坡打击部队，作为解决安全和公共秩序问题的综合执法机制，尤其是在首都吉隆坡，包括外国公民涌入和缅甸难民非法定居的问题。

“事实上，吉隆坡打击部队的首次行动就是突袭位于新冼都峇鲁的缅甸难民非法定居点。我通过吉隆坡打击部队强调，必须对非法定居点和建筑、无证经营以及未经授权的外国活动采取行动，”她还说道。
