Late salary payments, staff out-of-pocket expenses: Haus Coffee owner steps down

TikTok-viral cafe Haus Coffee has come under fire over allegations that it failed to pay staff salaries and suppliers on time.

One week after the outlet at Golden Mile Tower closed to "sort out internal matters", cafe owner Tan Junyu issued an apology on social media on Sept 26.

"We f*** up,**" he wrote at the start of the statement.

"My reckless lifestyle and habits have caused great inconvenience and disappointment to everyone who worked at Haus, customers, collaborators, and friends and family."

Allegations of mismanagement surfaced on Reddit and TikTok after the cafe first announced its temporary closure.

Netizens, some claiming to be former employees, alleged that salaries were paid late and that staff had to purchase drink ingredients out of their own pockets for pop-up events. Some patrons also criticised the poor customer service they encountered.

Tan, in the Sept 26 post, admitted that late salary payments occurred "more often than not".

He also acknowledged that employees had, on some occasions, incurred out-of-pocket expenses for cafe supplies due to inadequate operational arrangements.

"I failed in my responsibilities as an employer and business owner, and as a result, I placed everyone in an uncomfortable and unfair position, and I take full responsibility for that," Tan wrote.

Tan, who is also the owner of clothing store Rookies Studio, apologised again to those who had consigned their goods and experienced delayed payments. Haus Coffee is located within Rookies Studio.

Addressing criticism of the cafe's service, Tan apologised to customers and said a new management team had been put in place to oversee staff recruitment, training and financial matters "to ensure that the same mistakes will not be made again".

Tan added that he would "reflect on his actions" after stepping down from the business and said he was committed to rectifying the situation.

The statement did not mention who the new owner of Haus Coffee is. AsiaOne has reached out for more information.

Rookies Studio and Haus Coffee opened at their current premises in December 2024. The cafe is best known for its matcha lattes and banana pudding.
